Buck Knives article 1969

Old farts are supposed to be wise, your …….
A 10" bolt could easily be cut over a 100 times.
I get the idea they didn't cut it completely thru for their testing.

Jeff confirmed it and that's good enough.

Now they didn't cut the bolt completely through?

That's a new idea.

And Jeff didn't confirm it.........some unnamed engineer who must be an older fart than me made the claim........from his memories of 1969--some fifty-odd years ago.

We can all believe what we wish until better evidence than ancient opinion turns up.

I can be convinced.......but it has to be a little more concrete than what we have so far.

A picture? You mean the one in the article? Do you really think every blade produced in 1969 was smacked on the spine with a steel hammer? A publicity pic. The picture is just a picture of one knife. It means nothing as applied to the question at hand.

And, with all due respect to Mr. Hubbard.......if this engineer he talked to has been working for Buck for over 50 years he's older than me!!!

And I know how reliable I am with memories from 1969.

No........color me skeptical. I can be convinced with some real evidence.

I don't think anyone will be able produce a picture of every knife being hammered into a bolt in 1969. Why can't you just enjoy that fact they tested their knives for strength and toughness. Why drive it so far to create doubt in people minds. Your comment was heard and noted. Go with the flow already.

I'm not asking for a picture of every knife.......I'm quite aware that they didn't take a picture of every knife.......that would be as unlikely as driving every knife through a bolt with a steel hammer........which would mar the spine.

Sorry, I don't go with the flow if the flow is too far-fetched.

Like I said, I can be convinced.

Not with what has been said so far, though.

isnt what Jeff said good enough? do you know someone at BUCK who knows more than Jeff and has access to more BUCK knowledgable people than Jeff?

I'm good with what Jeff shares with us, thank you Jeff.......

Deja Vu all over again...lol

If I didn't believe all of the things I couldn't see, touch, smell, or taste first hand; I'd be a faithless, miserable, fool of a man. But I'm wise enough to take some things on faith, and other thing on the opinions and expertise of those who have seen, touched, smelled, or tasted the things I was not able to.

Jeff didn't say it.......some unnamed engineer said it.

And yes, Jeff has made it clear that he has no personal knowledge on the issue........just a chat with an engineer who's offering his memories of over fifty years ago.

Why argue about it?

It is what it is.......and that's obvious.

I really don't see how you can be convinced and I certainly don't care to spend my time trying to or listening to other people try to when I could be enjoying the conversation. You are trolling.

yeah I can see this is only gonna be distracting from the threads intention.....so I'm done distracting, sorry TAH TAH ....

This morning, I was searching the forum for something else and came across this article from several years ago. I had never seen it before and really enjoyed it. Here it is for others who might have missed it the first time as well.

Thank you. This works nice. It even strips out all of the crap that was already posted in threads from an individual. Peaceful bliss. :)

As a speculative fly on the wall, I would wonder why when testing a large quantity of knives for their ability to sever cold rolled steel bolts, why not make a fixture to hold the blade/knife perfectly vertical, feed wire from a roll under said blade, and use a hydraulic press to deliver a controlled pressure? Knuckle dragging hammer mechanics could ruin spines and edges.

“It's just that the notion that every knife produced in 1969 was driven through a steel bolt with a steel hammer is a little too far-fetched to stomach easily.” - Der Verminator

The article doesn’t say, as Der Verminator claims in his post, that every knife was driven through a steel bolt. It says they were given a whack on the spine while the edge was resting on a bolt. By plant experts. I think Der Verminator knows this and is trying to be contentious. Not buying it. Inflating claims to justify his skepticism seems exactly like trolling.

I visited the Buck factory in El Cajon many times from the early 1980’s until they moved to Idaho. I bought lots of knives at their in-house store which was inside the factory building. You could walk around and see into the production floor. It looked very old school with lo tech, high craftsmanship workers doing finishing and QC stuff by hand. I can easily believe they tapped every knife on a bolt at one time to test heat treat. It’s 100% like Buck.

Thanks for the article and the testimonials/ bona fides.

Reminds me of the atheist who was asking the preacher for proof that God exists. The preacher said, "You've got to have faith." The atheist said, "Why should I have faith when you can't prove that God exists." The preacher said, "You're right, I can't prove that God exists. But you can't prove He doesn't." :)
