Well, my friend and I decided to go backpacking this summer and figured it would be a good excuse, uh reason, to get new knife. However, I don't want to spend that much dough. I thinking about getting a Grohmann #1 or #3 belt knife or a Buck 102 or 105. All of these are around the $50-$60 range locally. Which one would you guys say is the better outdoor knife?

Other suggestions are open too, although I might not be able to find them in Edmonton :grumpy:

Thanks in advance!

Hi Thorrg,

The Bucks have a good reputation, though I can't claim to have used them myself.

I have, however, used my Grohmann knives extensively, and they make great all-around hiking / camp blades. The No. 1 is a classic. It would serve you well making fuzz sticks, prepping food, etc. - even cleaning fish or small game, should the need arise. Combined with a decent hatchet, I think it would make an ideal backpacking knife. Same goes for the No. 3, though I find the handle shape of the No. 1 to be more comfortable.

By the way, if you have access to sandpaper and a ball-peen hammer, it would be worth it to order a Grohmann in kit form. It's cheaper, and you get to enjoy a knife that you had a hand in making, which is great.

All the best,

- Mike

Buck makes a fine knife. I lost a 102 in the woods when I was 15.....many years ago :D

I've been eyeing one of the Grohmann's for some time now. Very nice design.

Can't go wrong either way, I would say. I'd go for the Grohmann.

Both the Buck knives and Grohman knives you are looking at are good choices. I personally like the Buck 119 as an all purpose outdoor knife and it's usually available from Walmart and Canadian tire at a good price. Some other ones to look at in this price range or slightly higher are the Cold Steel master hunter or Benchmade Rant drop point.

In Edmonton check out wholesale sports for a good selection and decent pricing.

Cant go wrong with a mora for backpacking. To keep the price down you can try the CS Bushman its 7in blade, I would sharpen it before going. It seems to keep the edge very well cheap and light. For the price each one of you can carry one of each of the knifes and still come in with in the price range of $70..

I would keep a look out on the makers forum and bag yourself a nice custom for the same money !!!!

I have not seen a bad suggestion yet. I would add the Buck Nighthawk to the mix if you like a bit bigger but not Hugh knife. I would handle as many as I could before choosing. Our Makers here do a great job of making good quality low cost knives and I have knives from several of them, the bulk being JK knives. As several have said, a Mora would do the job really cheap.

Might want to check out the Himalayan Imports forum here. Yangdu is running her Christmas specials, and there's been several R-series knives on sale, with the R-6 and R-10 being very nice outdoors type knives.

My R-10 (good balance)

Here's a Grohmann #1 and a US Schrade 165 - both in carbon and fine field blades for the price - great value for the money. The Grohmann is a mean slicer, whereas the Schrade is stouter - both made shaving sharp in the field, with ease:

Just caught your sig, love it. My sister gave me a great t-shirt last year that just says, "Howard Roark laughed."

Both slogans are intriguing and prompted me to research!

However, the best part about 555's signature comes in the second line!!! (Change...because..........)

Outstanding. Better than knives!
