Budget Fixed blade?

For the OP,

I will also carry The Buck 119, a great classic fixed blade.

Well, my friend and I decided to go backpacking this summer and figured it would be a good excuse, uh reason, to get new knife. However, I don't want to spend that much dough. I thinking about getting a Grohmann #1 or #3 belt knife or a Buck 102 or 105. All of these are around the $50-$60 range locally. Which one would you guys say is the better outdoor knife?

Other suggestions are open too, although I might not be able to find them in Edmonton :grumpy:

Thanks in advance!
I have a Buck 102, its one of my favorite small knives.
You can find most Bucks much cheaper on Ebay.
The Grohmanns are nice too.
I really like the Grohmann #100 Large Skinner!
Check out the different models here

S.I.R/Cabelas sells most of the Grohmann fixed blade line on their website.
You can also order them from the factory, and Grohmanns website lists online dealers. If you order from the factory you can get special order flatgrind and carbon steel versions of their fixed blade knives.

Moras are a good idea as well.
Maybe a Mora 2000 or a Triflex. You can get them at ragweed forge or BensBackwoods (online and they have an ebay store).

If i had none of the above and was starting from scratch i'd just Buy an Enzo Trapper in 01 steel. They are available on Bensbackwoods and ebay but they sell out really quick.

there was a thread not so long ago about someone asking for under 50 or 30 dollar blades, to test some of them. but the tests never showed.
i think the top choices there were the blackjack grunt, mora 2000, and... cant remember. my head is not the same as it used to be...

id go mora...for backpacking its lighter then the other options and can usually be worn around the neck...so it doesnt interfere with the ole hipbelt.

Cant go wrong with a mora, but if it fits your budget get a grohmann! They come with nice deep leather sheaths and are excellent knives.

I would probably suggest you pick up a Becker BK11 @ $37.00 and a Swiss Army Farmer for $20.00. This will keep you within budget and for camping/hiking you will have everything you would need.

If you were getting into Wilderness Survival I might change my recommendations.

If you get the Grohmann, do yourself a favor and get the carbon steel flat grind. I had the stainless saber grind version for awhile, and it was hard to get sharp.

I had your same problem about a couple of months back, the good members of this forum suggest rat knives. You are getting a very good value for their knives high, and they are made in the U.S.A. The metal is 1095 typical tool steel, overall very nice fit and finish and built to last. The only thing that I didn't care about the knife was how tactical it looked survival rambo. It the type of knife that looks great if you are a first responder or wear tactical clothing a lot, not to say its an ugly knife. Buck knives can be good knives but some of them are made in china and I have found some of the buck knives in your price range fit and finish questionable.

Welll.... I currently CARRY an Ontario Pilots Survival knife because I like the blade, the size and the 1095, but I don't think you can go wrong with a Buck. Take a look at the 103. I have been contemplating buying one for several years and it may be time for me to pull the trigger on that one.

Thanks for the help. I already have 2 moras and I love them (might make a sheath for my clipper). I just want something that feels less disposable. I also have a Vic Pioneer and a Spyderco Delica 4, so I don't need a folder. I am really leaning towards the Grohmann #1. Just looks and feels so nice. However, I am in no hurry so I'll definately check out the other suggestions.

One more question (for now). Does It say anywhere on Grohmann's website how much the different steel, handle, and grind options are? i really like the look of the #1 carbon with a flat grind.

The first "real" knife I ever bought was the Canadian Belt Knife aka Grohmann #1. I bought it at the factory in Pictou, NS in the summer of 1975. I think I paid C$16 for it.

I still have it and still use it. It also still has the original sheath.

Not saying anything about the Buck and I have a ton of Mora's but there is still something about the Grohmann that makes it one of the most attractive knives I've ever seen.

I have a Grohmann's #3, but I never really carry it. It just never felt... right.

I really like a stouter blade, I guess. YMMV.
