Budget Folders - I can't stop buying them up!

I love the standard Sod Buster but it's a pretty big knife for normal pocket carry without a clip. Been thinking about modding a clip onto it somehow.

The Jr. is a great little knife. Just a tad smaller than the Rat 2. I carry it much more than the standard. The standard has been relegated to my daily backpack for the most part and for some kitchen duties. It's a great slicer.

Dang, I think you may be right. It's WAY bigger than I thought it would be. Oh well, guess I have to get a JR now too  This time in carbon!!

Thanks Claude!
Great pics, it is one of my very Favorite knives!
The faux wood handle looks cool... Especially since you have the mean black one.
You have similar knives & background effects like I do haha!
Funny just how much alike many of us are!

Speaking of the Stubbing injury, this is something I witnessed myself.
One of my co workers wanted some time off...
So he held that sticking knife in his left hand, gripped the blade with his right hand, and pulled the knife.
Cut his hand to hell! Stitches, nerve damage, 6 Months off of work...
And you guys & gals will never believe me, but I witnessed this...
His first day back at work, on the first pig that morning, he said I need more time off, and did it again.
He purposely pulled his sticking knife through his closed right hand, again!
He was gone a similar amount of time, might of been 5 -6 Months...
So, after he did that, the maintenance dept modified our knives with D-Guards, to prevent that injury.
We didn't like the guards at first, but eventually we adapt right...
Thanks again for the pics Claude!

No problem, bro. My pleasure. The M16 and M21 Special Forces 14 varieties were the knives that long ago were responsible for my folder obsession. I was running around with them, long before my Benchmades, etc.

As to your story about your co-worker, WWWWWWTTTTTTTTFFFFFFFFFFFF !!!!! He's got to be a bona fide lunatic, to effectuate those self-inflicted wounds, especially to the extent of causing nerve damage. Good Lord... He's either crazy or lazy to do that for the time off. Or perhaps, both. Lol.

The Big Dogs {senseless name in light of the specs and dimensions} actually have true desert colored handles, unlike my above-pictured ZSF, which was advertised as desert, but as you can see is closer to resembling fake wood. The key to its Zytel scales feeling rock solid, is the fact that they are not hollow. Thus, although they are a type of plastic, similar to Valox, they feel far superior in strength and solidness. The Valox handles utilized by Benchmade on the few Valox models I own, feel like cheap toy handles, on a comparative basis, likely because Benchmade, in its infinite wisdom {sarcasm}, decided to make them hollow. Poor choice of protocol for relatively high priced knives, when CRKT can pull it off and do it right at a fraction of the cost. Being that I am a Benchmade fan boy, for me to say this, is quite meaningful.

As to you having similar background effects as I, lol. With bloodstained camouflage pants, Odin's Ravens and a Confederate flag hat, I stick out like a sore thumb here, in NYC. I spend a considerable amount of time in rural Kansas, though, where my personal effects and attire are met with less derision and contempt. Hahaaaa.

Check out the MAM folders, an inexpensive higonokami, Svord Peasant, Douk Douk, and Mercator Black Cat.

Plus Opinel, Aitor, and the many, many Rough Rider traditional folders available for $8-18; I'm thinking in particular of the large toothpick, a big, gaudy pimp knife if ever there was one, very sharp and well-made for under $10.

As for the CRKT M21-14SFG, i don't think I have ever had a knife so ugly and useless, although I did use it once to saw my way into a coconut. I was enchanted with it at first, but by the time my junky stepson stole it to fund his habit, I barely even missed it. If I had known he wanted it, I would have given it to him. The occasions where I needed to slit a sentry's throat were just not coming along all that often. The 585 Benchmade, that one I miss.

I don't mean to give offense to anyone who likes those CRKT's, they just don't do anything for me. For a big, useless knife, I prefer the Cold Steel Kudu, for about $5.00.

Holy crap, you guys have given me some great ideas for some budget knives. I'll probably acquire 3 or 4 over the next couple months and then start putting them through the paces. I need to come up with maybe 4 to 6 solid tasks.

Thanks again for all the suggestions.

Great suggestion. I love mine

OP, If you aren't one of the "anti-chinese" crowd, I recommend giving a try to many of Ganzo and SRM designs.

Cheap chinese beaters, really, but good Quality and value.

If USA branded is mandatory, try out the Byrd line, Ontario RAT and Utilitac, KaBar Dozier, ESEE Avispa and Zancudo, Cold Steel... all great budget options!

Those CF Jr's are beautiful. I've had my eye on them for a while. If they were a bit cheaper, I would have probably bought one by now. At almost $70, there are just other knives that come into play and that want my money.

Another thing I like on the M21-14SFG is the kind of little bird head type
rear portion of the knife, to facilitate pulling your knife out of
what/who you just stuck.
The knives with tapered pommels would be tough to retrieve.
Claude, the dude who cut his hand was the toughest MF in that plant of 1100 employees.
My best friend there & instrumental in my recovery.
I witnessed other acts of self mutilation to get away from work.
It was hell working there, I won't bore you anymore...
But I watched a 21 year old kid take a Swibo large blade, like a Hudson Bay type blade...
In his right hand and do a DEEP cut across his left forearm.
He decided any lasting damage would not be so bad since he was right handed.
It was quite an awful place...

The only budget knives I really get excited for anymore are cold steel products...it's all CRK's fault!! Nice knives on this thread though...budget knives definitely have their place...my Ontario rat is my go to beater and is built like a brick **** house!

Too damned true. And IMHO, its M21 cousin. However, as a big blade addict, I only own and use the Special Forces 14 varieties of both knives. Some of the M16s and M21s have smaller blades and only half guards. Those ones are not for me.

My sentiments exactly!
Tho, by wanting a double guard my limit my choices... That is a good thing for my wallet!

How about the Kershaw Shuffle or the BRK Avispa Folder? :D

So far the last couple of months of so, I have been really intrigued by the “budget” folders out there. The “Bang for your Buck” knives. I have obtained a few over the years and a few more recently. To date, I‘ve got the Case Sod Busters (Standard & Jr.), Opinel No. 8 Carbone, the Rat 1 & 2, SAK Farmer & Pioneer and now the Spyderco Delica 4. I know the Delica is stretching the “budget” definition but you definitely get a lot of bang for the buck w/ this knife.

I’m no knife reviewer but I want to maybe do a hands on review of maybe 8 to 10 of these types of knives in the future and want to obtain a couple or few more. Just want to do some simple test like cutting cardboard, feather sticks, slicing, etc. I have been looking at the ESSE folders and will likely pick up a KaBar Dozier Folding Hunter soon. What others might be worth a look? I want to try and keep each knife around or under $40 or so. I know there are a ton of Kershaw models that fall into this category but will have to narrow it down to 1 or 2 at most.

Just got the Delica 4 last night and so far I’m really impressed. Had to do a minor pivot adjustment but will let it break in for a while now.

So, what are some others to consider? Just looking for some ideas. Feel free to give any thoughts are those listed about as well.

Ontario's Utilitac 2 lineup could pretty much be considered a budget version of a ZT knife. Really solid knives, for around $25. Kershaw has tons of options. I'm partial to the OSO Sweet, for a more recent one, the Link is a really solid choice.

These are not folders but I have found these to be better than a lot of expensive knives:

Wow, some more great ideas. Thanks again everyone.

Not sure why I've become so intrigued by these knives. I think part of it is the collection bug and some of it is price and ease of obtaining them. That and I'm truly interested in the "bang for your buck" aspect. I'm not interested in cheap knives that are a POS, I really like finding the gems out there.

Don't get me wrong, I like good knives as well and have a pretty big collection of "mid priced" knives from ZT, Spyderco, BM, Falkviven, KaBar, GEC, Case, etc.

Something just fun about the "budget folders"

What I like about budget folders are that they run the steels a little softer. While edge retention suffers a little I can jam the blades into harsh materials like scoring Concrete backerboard while suffering little to no recourse besides a few minutes sharpening up the edges again!

I like my Zancudo's handle ergonomics better than my Rat 2 (I love my Rat 1). Plus for the price I can goof around with mods and not worry about the cost of replacing something I messed up.

ESEE Zancudo + some amateur file experimenting:
