Budget Pig Sticker

For a few years now I've been on the search for a particular knife. It is for pig hunting the jungles in Hawai'i. It will be used to stick the pigs and for various butchering tasks (splitting ribs, pelvis, cutting through joints). I have a few nice skinning knives so this knife won't be used for that. Here's my requirements: I need to be able to get it sharp, can't be a brittle stainless, NEEDS A SECURE SAFE SHEATH, Blade length should be between 6-8", must be lightweight as any extra weight adds up when you're sprinting through the jungle chasing your dogs. I also would like to keep the cost under 30$.

I have used a Buck 119 with good results but after witnessing a friend's snap off inside a pig I retired the knife and ended up giving it away. I have also used my bark river woodland, spyderco tenacious, gerber profile, gerber gator, buck pathfinder, and my machete. But am looking for something that will work better.

For what your doing I really think that the Glock field knife would be hard to beat. I've heard that a lot of guys use European surplus bayonets, but they need to be re-profiled a lot of the time. As stated above, also look at condor. They make some very nice inexpensive knives.

How's the sheath on the glock. No problem with it hanging on your belt while running, crawling, swimming, jumping, hanging etc.....??? Its like an obstacle course to get to the caught pig sometimes and lots of knives are lost due to inferior sheaths.

The sheath is good. It has a little plastic lip that holds the knife in place. When I first bought it I had to use two hands to take it out. So I trimmed some of the lip away so that the knife would come out easier.
I believe that retention won't be an issue, especially since you can kind of customize it by trimming the lip.
I did have a little problem with rust on mine though. I left it in my tool bag for about 2 months on a boat in the winter. The boat was in fresh water at least. It even started to rust under the black coating on the blade. So just be aware of that.

The CTD knife is garbage IMO. I bought two. Tried batoning with one and on the third hit the blade broke off. I gave the other one away. I'd try a Condor or the Glock or even a big Becker from Kbar.

I would say talk to Tom Krein about a pig sticker. He hunts with knives, and he always makes himself one.

How about picking up an Old Hickory Sticker and getting a simple sheath made for it? As long as you keep it oiled up, it shouldn't be a problem.

The old hickory is a sliced hand waiting to happen. Its a straight uncontoured handle. With a straight square handle terminating into a sharp blade. What happens when you go to stab a boar and it moves its leg back causing you to stab a bone. Your hand will slide up the blade and you'll have a hell of a time patching yourself up.

With some handle modificiations it could work.

Friend of mine uses a Buck Nighthawk and has no complaints....I wouldn't necessarily call it a budget knife, but not over priced. He opted to spend a little more to ensure he doesn't find out at a very inappropriate moment that it's not the knife he thought it was. But I have no personal experience and can only go by what he says. For a little more there are some great "makers" here that could make one to your specs.

He wants to keep it under $30. If you could raise it to $50ish, I'd look at a Ontario Raider Bowie or a used Western W-49 Bowie.

There's a lot to recommend the Nighthawk, if he can find the extra $20 or so.

The Glock knife is a great deal for $30 as long as you're not expecting to chop with it. And retention is superb, that blade ain't going nowhere with that sheath.

So is my Brother. Lives in Kamuela.

So I am going to pay it forward a bit.

I have a vintage Gerber BMF I was going to put on the "Bay" It is a NON sawback model.

If you want it, let me know, I will send it to you for nada.

Might be slightly heavier than you were thinking, but would be an excellent sticker.

If it doesn't interest you, I will not be offended. Just let me know.

noos on knifetests.com tested the hard use knife. it chops concrete and stabs plate metal pretty well. it could work for your stuff...
