You missed the part where I said I examined and tested them enough to know they aren't defective.
And thus I know they are of use, as I've (thoroughly) examined and tested them enough to know that before I packed them away, now that they are in fact packed away, I have no need of 'em and don't touch them but once or twice a year when I check inventory and restock or readjust stock.
I have a couple kabars and others (including other mora's) at my disposal for daily and situational use, camping, fishing, etc... Don't need my BOB Knives, I know they are there...
In most foreseeable scenarios; I'm not directly in an urban setting, but rather just outside, and home is a stout little hilltop homestead with a well and a lake, a place where we can actually hunker down for a bit, and either dig in or plan a next move, but no need for absolute haste, so I will have time to appropriately grab other Knives from my collection to carry and to equip others with, but additionally I will also have the Knives (enough for the family) already in my BOB, I know they're there.
In a worst case scenario where I would have to hastily evacuate and wouldn't have time to grab anything but the BOB which in conveniently located along the exit route, I won't be knifeless, I know I have a stout Schrade in 1095 that's been camping and tested, as well as a Mora and a Boker+ lockback folder, (plus Mora's and Schrade framelocks for everyone else in the family, all tested enough to know they aren't defective and are in good working order). I know they are there...
The point being your BOB is packed sufficiently with your needs, and properly inventoried so that you don't need to continually tinker with it and take stuff out. If you packed it appropriately you leave it go, and you know it's there and what's in it for emergency use only in the event you ever would have to actually bug out.
-(which is hopefully never, but just like fire alarms and health insurance, it's always better to be prepared then to be caught off guard).
(With the wife and a lazy video game junky teenager as well as a toddler, there are actually 3 bug out bags, mine being the heaviest by far being ex-military and much more accustomed to and capable of handling the additional weight, but everyone has a few blades in theirs).
In the worst imaginable
