Building a 5 board bench - Wormy Maple

We tore down an old barn on our place when I was a kid- the siding was all wormy Chestnut!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Some was planed down and used for headboards and chairs but much was pretty rough.

Man I bet the good parts were beautiful when finished!

Yeah, the larvae bore and eat, and their excrement discolors the wood around them. Cool looking stuff, has character.

Wow. I'd have loved to see that.

Legs removed from the big plank, and the top is ready for routing and initial sanding.

OK. This morning I squared up the legs and just built a 'house of cards' style stackup to show the general idea.

Then this afternoon I put a 7 degree angle on the legs, inlet the legs for the aprons, and cut the aprons. Unfortunately, the kreig jig I ordered is not shipping as quickly as I wanted it to, so assembly may have to wait a bit.

I still have to cut the cutouts on the legs, assemble it, distress it, and finish it.

The legs will also taper from bottom to top.

OK, all of the machine work is done and the bench is all glued and screwed.

Cool, looks good. If you get a chance can you flip it over and show us the kreig holes. I was kind of wondering given the 7 degree slant of the legs just where they are located.

How are you going to finish it? Danish oil would look good IMO.

Cool project Andy......a well executed design. It will definitely pass the "poop test" !
