I recently bought a knife from Burger knives and during the whole process up to the time a paid he would answer emails promptly.

Then after I got the knife I had a some issues and he returned a email but didn't address all of my questions and then he stopped responding all together.

Being that he charges $40 for shipping I can't just send him the knife back. While the issues aren't major when I took the knife apart the cheap materials and construction became very apparent.

Three Nylon washers(Come on, you couldn't have used Teflon or at least PB) in the pivot, very thin screws holding it together, some cheap platic like back spacer and burn marks on areas of the knife. And while it came with a take down tool it is MUCH more complicated than a CRK(which I can take down, clean and put back together in minutes while laying down watching TV.

Don't get me wrong it does have some good qualities like centered blade and it locks up solid and looks good on the outside for the most part but the insides of it and them not responding once they made their money kind of turned me off.

While this might be a decent buy if it didn't cost over $300 with shipping. I don't feel this knife is worth it.

What exactly was wrong with the knife?

You say,

What were the "issues" you refer to and which questions were addressed by Trevor Burger and which were ignored?

I asked him if there's some trick to ressembly, he said he would be posting a video link on his site at some time, I asked him for the link, he didn't respond, I repeatadly asked if the three nylon washers were intentional and needed for some reason, he didn't answer any time(which was kind of strange because I heard of him now having tighter tolerances in his new knives) I asked if there was some trick to opening it because it tore up my thumb, he never answered that either. There are burn or tool marks on the knife I didn't bother asking about because he wouldn't respond.

I see that you are also from South Africa, where Burger Knives are from. Are you a friend of Trevor's?

I also forgot to mention the knife came with a dull edge that was very uneven in one part which is suprising for a knife that is called "custom".

I really like that design. Bummer that it was not really up to spec. I'm waiting on a Boker Exskelibur. :(

I am certainly a friend of Fred Burger, Trevor's father and the man who originated the design. I have known him and his wife Pat for over 20 years and I have many of Fred's knives, all custom but all fixed blades.

My recent look at the folder was 2 weeks ago at Blade were I had a good look at it on David Burger's table, Fred's son who lives in the US.
I thought it was a well made, well thought out little knife which worked very well and was good value for money. It would appear you feel differently.

It sounds from your original post that it was not one specific thing which was a major flaw, but a few minor problems with the knife and more importantly the general poor response from Trevor.

As you purchased the knife directly from Burger Knives have you asked to return it for a full refund?

I didn't think I would get very far trying to get a refund and I had already paid $40 for shipping.

The knife looked great before I took it apart. And if he would have been courteous enough to just respond I would have never of even started this thread. Don't get me wrong it's not a horrible knife, the blade is centered the lockup is rocksolid, it's lightweight and very attractive but the washer issue and him not responding is what bugged me. I can live with tool marks or small screws even and at the cost as is it would still be a decent knife but after the shipping I could have easily bought a Small Sebenza or full custom piece.

I went ahead and ordered an exk1 from Trevor... should be here in a week. I'll post my impressions here when I get it!

Good luck with that.

Hopefully you get one that's better than the one I got.
