Phil, You were close. This is what happens when people eat oregon mushrooms and look at cows.

I just started cutting some of the ironwood.
What do you guys think? Is this stuff any good?

I was living in my truck for awhile. i spent most of my time in the northwest. I left eugene -which was a fine town. I met some hippy kids who were begging for change, i bet they had rich parents and just wanted to grow dreads and look cool. But anyway i ended up in northern cali. i pulled in to a park at night. Early in the morning , middle of may, i woke up in a redwood forest. HUGE ,Lush and drizzly/foggy and cold. I started to take a walk and i came upon a herd of elk. - i would say there were atleast 25 of em. They looked at me and kept walking. I froze and watched there smokey breath until they were gone.It was amazing. I must of sat in that forest all day without moving and was intranced by the beauty of the lush ferns and huge reddish trees, while waves of fog came and went. Time had vanished and all there was, was all there was.--marekz-----

Cool story Marek.

My oldest sister lived in Arcata, CA for a bit and I regret never going out there to visit her.

The redwood forests remain on my short list of places I must go before I die.

So...how big is that big old Canadian Redwood forest?

It ain't old growth but it goes from my back yard over a fence and then about a 5-6 day hike through rain forest to Whistler BC. ( I'd have to go up to my log cabin I built buy an unnamed lake which is full of trout then past Coquitlam lake and bush wack the rest of the way)

Mark, on that ironwood-- I'm thinking Big Bowie Blocks.

I just hope I'm watching when you post them.

I sent an email with the mailing address. Thank You Ken! I can't wait to see the dagger. Me and a couple thousand other people. Thank You!

Today I grabbed one of the redwood burls to see what it would be like.
It's pretty ugly as it sits. You really don't know what you have till you start cutting.

Next I cut it into 2 inch wide strips. Looks like there will be a lot of waste but some of it is looking promising.

More than half will be going into the burn pile, but some of it is looking really good.

I wiped a few with a damp rag and found there was treasure inside this crusty old burl.

This was one of the really old burls I found under a pile in the guy's warehouse. Really old, dry stuff. Harder than normal, close to maple in hardness. Now I know what I will be doing tomorrow.

Now is when I have to really get creative with the cutting.
The first photo shows 2 redwood burls cut into manageable size pieces. These 2 were under a pile of stumps. Washed away the dirt and rocks first. Now time for the big bandsaw.
2nd photo shows a closer shot. This is all old growth lace. Some is almost purple.

I cut this off one of the pieces

and found this inside

This is a part I cut off from an area I did not think would have much burl. This is definitely old growth. When you cut the old growth there is a distinctive smell almost like incense.

Looks like I'm never going to get my website done. At least not when I have cool wood like this to cut up.
