Burl Hunting Trip

I was just wondering. Where on a tree does the burl come from? Is it the base of the stump? John

With Redwood you can have a burl form on the side of the trunk, just under the ground like a huge onion, or as nodules on the end of a root. They can be anywhere from the size of a baseball to the size of a car. We had a 4500 pounder a couple years ago.

Redwood burls can have lot's of variations in hardness, colors and types of figure. Just when I think I've seen it all, I cut into another that looks different from anything I have seen before.

That is HUGE!!!!!!! I never seen anything like that before. That must be nice to see things like that all over. John
