Bush-Ido

Rick, i am not familiar with blades of this size or with 1075 steel.
is the intended use for clearing brush ?
is the blade made to have some flex ?
what is Rc and does 1075 perfrom similar to 1095 for edge holding and ease of sharpening ?
thanks, roland (another Canuck eh)

Roland,
The edge is somewhere around 58RC. I do not have a Rockwell tester so I can not guarantee it but everything was properly heat treated and I would gladly outline my process if you wish. I draw back the spine to spring temper on these big blades fo added toughness.

The blade can flex without failure.... but at 5/32" it is stronger and won't flex as much as a machete would.

1075 is a simple carbon steel and heat treats easily. But don't let "simple" fool you into thinking it's less than adequate. It makes an excellent blade with great edge retention and is well suited for my low-tech hands on approach to bladesmithing. I believe that I get the most out of the steel I use and back my blades 100%.

1095 is a super steel and with tightly controlled heat treatment can make a fine high-performance blade with better than average edge retention properties. I don't use 1095 for the simple fact that I'm not set up to take FULL advantage of this steel.

As far as the intended use of this blade.... Its a big honking knife... use your imagination...

Thanks, eh?
Rick
