This is the OFFICIAL, one and only, Pre-Order Thread for the Bush Wakizashi Mega and the Tyrant Katana Magnum Opus. This thread will remain locked until Wednesday 01/07 @ 7:00PM EST, at which point it will go live. Orders will be placed in this thread and I will have it stickied in my subforum for future reference.

The Bush Waki and Tyrant Katana Magnum Opus will both be ordered in this thread together.

TURN AROUND TIME, DEPOSITS, AND OPTIONS:

The Bush Waki will be made first. We are aiming for a turn around time of 4-6 months to begin delivery.
The Tyrant Katana Magnum Opus will be made second. We are aiming for a turn around time of 8-12 months to begin delivery.

I am working with all due speed on both models, but these are complex projects and delays can happen, so be prepared that your blade could take longer than anticipated. If 12 months pass and you don't have your Waki, you are eligible for a refund. If 18 months pass and you don't have your Katana in hand, you are eligible for a refund.

OPTIONS
- My creative wheels just don't stop turning. Between the time these are launched and the time they are finishing production, I'm sure we will come up with some crazy cool handle and finish options in addition to what is offered at launch.
- With that said, you only need to tentatively select your handle material, blade finish, and any Misc options. Once the swords are finishing production, I will post real pictures of all the handle options and blade finishes we have come up with, so you won't have to make your final decision until you have seen them for real. So if you tentatively order canvas micarta and a stonewashed blade at launch, but see the finished pictures a few months from now and decide you want carbon fiber scales and a satin finish, that's no problem.

DEPOSIT
- I am requiring a $650 upfront flat deposit for the Waki and a $900 flat deposit for the Katana, with final balance due upon delivery. The deposit helps cover production cost and get these models off the ground. I hate asking for money upfront, but its not possible to do a project this expensive and complex without a deposit. Keep in mind I won't actually make any money myself until your blade is ready for delivery.

Finally, before we start, I want to give a HUGE thank you to M MechE for doing the the modeling and simulations for both swords. The man is a certifiable genius and this project simply would not have been possible without his help and support.

Now, onto the Good Stuff.

THE BUSH WAKI MEGA

The Bush Waki Mega is the culmination of a nearly decade long desire to create the ultimate bush sword that you can go smash stuff in the woods with. We've spent countless hours working through various iterations before settling on these specs. This is a Wakizashi in name only. It has absolutely nothing in common with a real Japanese Wakizashi, but I had to call it something.

This blade has some incredible features that I think really set it apart from anything out there. First, the sword itself is utterly massive. Coming in at 35in overall length and 3lbs in weight, its a true monster that's meant to be swung with two hands.
It features a unique compound bevel for increased cutting performance and durability + it has the added benefit of looking kind of like a hamon which is cool. For the handle, we have a fully enclosed tang with a seppa, steel guard, steel collar, and CNC milled steel pommel. We worked overtime to make sure this sword will be both durable and high performance. The blade features a large Center of Percussion that will mitigate shock and make sure that your chops make that nice dead thud sound with minimal reverberation. If you've ever played a racquet sport like tennis or pickleball, you'll know how much just a few grams of lead tape can change the power of the racquet or paddle. With the Bush Waki, we worked hard to create a generous center of percussion that can accommodate a variety of handle materials without losing performance.

The only compromise we had to make on the Bush Waki, is that handle is permanently affixed to the tang. The scales and handle components are not removable or interchangeable, so pick your handle options wisely.

This blade is made to stand up to hard use and big powerful chops. With that said, Its important to avoid batoning directly on the handle or guard as they could sustain damage. Likewise, I'd avoid trying to do something like baton a tree trunk in half. Even with great engineering, a sword can only be so durable when it gets to this length. But, this will process your firewood no problem.

Lastly, on fit an finish. I am going to do my absolute best to make these as clean and beautiful as possible. That said, at this price point, I can't spend my entire life chasing grit scratches or fighting to grind out tiny tool marks. You may see a small tool mark here and there or a grit mark through the stonewashed finish. Likewise, if you go with a satin finish, it may not be as totally flawless as it would be on a small knife. In terms of flatness, I will do my absolute best to get these as flat as possible, but there will probably be a small amount of deflection across a blade this big. I will not send you a blade with a noticeable warp, but don't be disappointed if you put it on a precision granite block you can see some daylight coming through. This is a compromise that must be made to use Z Tuff with a low temper and get the best toughness and edge performance possible. I could make my life easier and get all of these dead flat with a 1000F temper but we would lose edge stability and we'd have a worse sword.

My makers mark will probably be laser etched or milled into the rear of the pommel. I don't want to put anything on the blade or take away from the aesthetic by adding writing.

DLC is so hard to remove off that you basically get one shot at it, and I can't scrap an entire blade if it isn't perfect. This is one of those options that may not even be feasible from a QC standpoint, but we will find out). I will run a test batch and see how they turn out in terms of appearance and making sure that the temp controls are adequate to not harm the temper of the Z Tuff. So don't be disappointed if we end up not being able to make DLC work on a blade this size.
MISC Options

Blending the timeless aesthetic and power of the Katana with the best of modern materials and manufacturing, finished to perfection by hand with the human touch.

ON DESIGN FEATURES

We wanted this blade to be historically accurate in terms of size, with fully optimized cutting performance, and of course, a durable, fully enclosed tang handle construction with interchangeable parts....its alot. Making a sword this special with just a blade and two handle slabs was never an option.

We spent months designing a handle assembly that would 1. Be strong enough to never fail even if abused and 2. Look the part, and 3. and be easy for customers to take down and customize with interchangeable parts. This was a whole lot harder than you think. To maintain strength, we had to eliminate any holes in the front half of the tang. This necessitates some pretty cool engineering.

The handle assembly is composed of 5 major parts, a stainless steel guard with a small seppa, two scales that come together to fully enclose the tang, a steel collar to hold them together at the front, and last but least, a steel kashira/pommel. We knew from the start that we wanted the kashira to be not just ornamental, but part of the kinetics. With a heavier than traditional Kashira, we are able to generate an incredibly large and forgiving center of percussion and improve snappiness while maintaining a pretty traditional balance point (about 4inches infront of the guard). Now, for the fun part, a heavier Kashira also means it will undergo some pretty extreme stresses. We went through about 10 potential pommel and tang constructions before M MechE pulled out an idea straight from aerospace. The Kashira is attached using a fir-tree root dovetail system. Its what they use to attach turbine blades. Its the strongest theoretical joint possible and has the added advantage of being redundant if a dovetail cracks or fails, and the way we designed it, it works to dissipate shock. Its pretty freaking cool. If we didn't need a hole in the tang for heat treat, we could make the entire tang without any holes and still have everything held together by the pommel. A picture of the system is shown at the bottom of the thread.
The pommel is also fully adjustable from the rear, so if any play ever develops, you can just tighten up the screws on the back and eliminate it.

Now, we did have to make one small compromise, I said it would be easy to take off the handle....well it might actually take you a bit of time, but its the best solution possible and whats the downside to spending a few more minutes working on your katana?

The Tyrant Katana also features a compound bevel to improve durability, cutting performance, and balance. This has the added side effect of looking like a hamon. On a full satin finish, the prominence of this compound bevel may get washed out a bit. We spent a huge amount of time getting the balance and center of percussion optimized. The blade has a fairly traditional point of balance (about 4in infront of the guard) with fantastic kinetics and a large Center of Percussion. Hit anything with the front half of the blade and you should experience smooth, vibration free cuts. We made sure that choices in handle materials and options will not negatively effect CoP.

ON USE
The Tyrant Katana is a real sword. Its meant for sword targets like Tatami cutting mats, 2x4's, soft wood, carcasses, bone etc... Its not designed to take down a hardwood tree or split firewood. If you want a blade that can do that, get the Bush Waki Mega, If you want a snappy, powerful, target oriented sword with all the bells and whistles, the Tryant Katana is what you want.

A Note on Fit and Finish

I am going to make these as perfect, clean, and beautiful as I possibly can. When it comes time to finish and assemble these, I am planning on spending an entire day putting together and inspecting each individual blade. Yes, an entire day per single blade. Expect close to perfect, but keep in mind, its also a 39in sword and not a small knife. Even with everything dialed in, fit and finish may not be as perfect as what can be done on a tiny knife. My promise is that I will do the best fit and finish I am capable of as a maker, which on my good days, is pretty solid. With that in mind, there are a few things that will be out of my control, mainly small amounts of warpage. I'm planning on heat treating these myself, one by one, entirely by hand, but even with the best possible practices, low temper Z Tuff does not always cooperate. These may have a tiny amount of warpage across the entire 39in length. Again, its a necessary compromise to get the best possible edge performance. With that said, I will under no circumstances send you a blade with a noticeable warp, but don't be disappointed if you can't measure its flatness in microns.

My makers mark on these will be on the tang, hidden under the scales like a traditional katana. I might even write it in Japanese characters to maintain the aesthetic.

In for a katana. Probably stonewash, grey terotuf (although interested to see some of the other options), and saya.

I’m really liking how both turned out, but I already have a K18, so that probably covers my needs for 3lb, 2-hand mega choppers.
