Bushcraft community hate towards non-bushcraft knives? What's up with this bushcraft craze? šŸ˜‚

Always wondered if people are willing to carry all the silly 'bushcraft' things, for the love of god why not a bic lighter or two?

I carry Bics, a firesteel and flint/steel fire kits in all my packs. I like to be redundant, so I don't have to rub two sticks together!

Also, those dudes can keep that bow drill nonsense, I’ll tell you THAT for free.

I love how the same dudes who talk about different stick shaving techniques designed in order to save caloric energy also teach this method on their Yourube channels. Ohhhh, now I see why you wanted to use the least amount of expenditure possible when making feathersticks, it’s so you could struggle with this trash fire making method for 30 minutes (unless in absolutely fantastic conditions, with the perfect materials) in order to make a spark, which you then use to try get a fire going. Perfect!

Fatwood and a Bic/fire steel will start a fire just nicely!

Ok, so we used all different terms for these thing already, et: "bushcraft", "tactical", "survival", "Last resort", "camping knife" etc.

How about we use the good old Eastern European term of "Tourist knife"? Not badass enough?

Tourist knife here actually means adventurer knife and not touristic knife.

First, even though you may not like the show (I do), Alone is actual people living this stuff. They’re given an segment of items with which to camp. The first or second winner won with a decidedly non-bushcraft knife: a kukri. The large majority of people on the most recent season chose to forego a stand alone knife entirely and instead brought multi tools. Speaks to the fascination with these knives that even the people actually doing it are choosing to forego the scandi-ground traditional ā€œbushcraftā€ option in favor of a small locking blade of meh steel quality.

Second, what’s true of bushcraft is true of many things in the gear hobby: it’s filled with people who want stuff just to have it. I’ve been here long enough to remember when Ed Calderon(Ed’s Manifesto) was posting pictures of his hawks and Emerson Persian in the EDC thread. He has since become an expert in ā€œnon-permissive environmentsā€ and has gained a large sycophantic following on social media. I think some of his stuff he teaches is cool enough and I subscribe to reverse edge knife theory when it comes to defense, but that’s largely due to Craig Douglas and my grappling background. Anyhow, Ed posted a picture of his EDC and it contained a Deauth device meant to bombard routers with packers and effectively shut down a WiFi network. Some guy inquired as to what it was. He received a reply that simply said ā€œdeauthorā€. He then started talking excitedly about how he *needed* one. I asked him why, and his answer was basically that he wanted one because Ed had one. He had no idea what it did or how to use it, he just wanted it. These are grown adults, remember that. Ed literally has these guys raiding Walmarts for Pioneer Woman pairing knives as basically ditch knives.

Point is that this exists far beyond the bushcraft community and permeates every aspect of the ā€œgearā€ community, whether it be knives, guns, lights, etc.

This is like religion everyone has a belief. If it works for you that's all that counts. Just leave alittle room for learning.
