Bushcraft: ESEE vs. Steak Knives

man, do I feel stupid.
I never thought about using a steak knife -- I used to use a paring knife as my "patch knife" until I found a #2 wood handled Mora.
(which also makes a great steak and/or turkey carving knife)

look, you can take any knife and make it what you want it to be, with the proper skills.

(as I put on my flame retardant suit) take a lawnmower blade, circular saw blade, a sawsall blade and craft it into a "whatever" knife for the bush..

do you need it?? no, do you even need a knife?? NO.. you can survive without one period, many have done it over and again.. of course a knife makes everything easier but in reality isn't needed..

so to answer your question If I found the right 'old' steak knife with decent steel, put a scandi grind on it, sheath it.. then yeah it would be a 'bushcraft' knife or any other knife I deem necessary at the moment...

I picked up my kitchen knife today and was wondering if I could baton it through a thick piece of wood. Silly thought I guess (but I'm still gonna try it :D).

The in-laws still have their junkie beat-up set of Chicago Cutlery kitchen knives in their kitchen sitting next to the nice set I bought them (and they use all the time now). The handles are shrunken and water damaged from being in the dishwasher and the rivets are so loose that they rattle. The inexpensive no-name stainless blades are done in a shallow hollow grind. We're talking pretty crummy here.

When I'm over visiting for a weekend or so and I'm starting up the wood stove in the morning I'll sometimes grab the chef's knife out of the set and use it to baton some kindling. It's never complained. I think we make a bigger deal out of batoning than we really need to. :p

99 % of us are never going to actually have to "survive". We might camp, hike and have some adventures, but actually using whatever blade we have on us as an EDC is the one we're going to use. That means you should have your "survival" blade not only when you're playing in the woods, but at work, at home and everywhere in between. If you have the mindset that the S will HTF at any time, then you have to prepare all the time, not just on certain occassions. That said, most folks will use their blades to cut some rope, maybe open a package, and the ever challenging donut wrapper. Me, well I'll keep a folder in my pocket and my ESEE-5 on my hip everyday. Never know, a big steak or donut could attack at any time.

I just used the 5 as a steak knife a while ago. I had 2 frozen KC strips packed together and I used the 5 to baton the frozen steaks apart. I went "Man I wish I had something to split those with" and was looking the the kitchen. Then the light came on in my head. :D

That's what the HEST prybar is for !!! :D
