Hello Farid. D6, D3 ? I have experience using knives with D2. How do D6 & D3 differ from the functional standpoint ?
This is the first i have heard of these steels.
thanks, roland

Hello Roland,
Thanks for asking, I like using D2, D3 and D6, here are the differences. D3 and D6 gets much harder and are around 20% - 25% more wear resistant than D2 (in my opinion)

D2 - 1.55% carbon, 11.5% chromium, 0.20 vanadium
D3 - 2.1% carbon, 12% chromium, 0.2 - 0.25 vanadium
D6 - 2.2 - 2.3% carbon, 12% chromium, around 1% - 1.2% (W) Tungsten

Hope this helps to understand the differences between the three tool steels, my cutting competition choppers are made from D3 right now, it is a high performance tool steel.
take care

Thank you Farid. I have found my D2 blades to be very wear resistant, so these knives must be even more exceptional as users and almost never need re-sharpening with 'real world' average use.

They cut very well, take a look at the other bushcraft I have for sale made from D3 steel, very simple design but very high performance.
take care Roland

Wow Farid. I first thought you were off your Rocka'! Then double checked your figures on steel composition. Holy Crap BatMan! Are you more than on the mark!
WOW! AGAIN WOW! Carbon mixed w/ Chromium has been the magic key to what I consider THE BEST!

You did it brother! WOW ! Thanks Farid, for that enlightenment. Now that's what I call a knife, WOW! The carbon/Chrome mixture is truly amazing. Very impressed. You can keep all that 5150, 1095 (sorry, but it's true), and especially ATS 34 -LOL, WOW D3 Farid, very nice.

Very very nice, you're on your game! This man knows his knife steel, drool, I was second behind Rprocter in the "Sure whatever" scenario, this really is special steel.

Absolutely! WOW! Carbon mixed w/ the right everything else makes that blade...................impose it's will! WOW!

I also like to test my steels to destruction. It is all part of pushing the boundaries all in the name of learning and understanding what steels can and cannot do.
The D6 bent a lot before it snapped

Right now making these in green G10, tan micarta, black micarta and 1 orange G10

For those of you who like high performance steels check out my CPM-REX-121 project on here.
Thanks

Farid:

I'm interested in making a knife out of D3 - how does it grind? Does it eat up ceramic belts say like CPM S-30V does?

Awesome stuff Farid.
Been checking out your stuff and that D3 blade that you have...i'm drooling.

Speaking of which, how does the blade shape look like after this?

And what metal pin is it?

thanks

Hi TK,
Grinds like D2, very easy to work with, but after heat-treating it's another story all together. Get your edge thickness close to what you want 'before' heat-treating.
Hope that helps

Please remember that I have a lot of experience using lots of different steels, and even different heat-treating formulas for one type of steel, so take the D3 or D6 for example I have had to carry out different heat-treating formulas to get here, this is not something that comes free or quickly, you have to take the time and try out different formulas and find out what works best for you and the application which your knife is going to be used for.
Hope that helps.
