Bushcraft Knife under $200.00 and why?

Hi Mike,

Are familiar with Ragweed forge? You'll find plenty of Roselli models there, and they're located in Sanborn NY.

From Rosellis lineup I'd recommend the Carpenter for general duty BC knife. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M1CHc9ALxMQ It is also much better quality knife than the Marttiini carver.

I've always found the Roselli Hunter and Leuku models to be too clumsy for dressing game or fish or for fine woodworking.

I would also suggest Deering Knives. They have a couple puukko styles and the micarta ones are close to 200 dollars (that's the only reason I didn't mention them, they're just slightly over your budget.).

The Roselli looks like a good knife, now I want to try one.

I will check that out as well. It's taking every ounce of willpower that I can muster not to just get the Pasi Hurttila that I want and is finally in stock, just ALOT more than these knives, ha. Something about it being completely hand made really draws me to it.

Since you already have that in mind I suggest you just go ahead and get it. If you don't you might keep wondering about it later. Sure it's a bit more expensive, but it's cheaper than getting something else and eventually getting the Hurttila anyways.

I'd choose one of Pasi's knives over any of the three in your OP.

Which model are you looking at? I suggest going to the source and buying from Pasi directly. It'll be a longer wait as he'll have to make your knife, but it'll be cheaper. Depending on the handle material you want it might even fall within your budget. Buying from Finland is hassle free these days with PayPal and email communication.

Thanks everyone! I really want the Pasi, and will get one. Mainly I wanted one of his stacked birch bark models, and there is the exact one I have been drooling over for sale on a certain Finnish site that specializes in these sorts of things. It is where I will end up, but after some pricey purchases I just shouldn't spend that much, right now.

I just finished a series of emails with Battle Horse and am ordering a FieldCrafter for under a $100.00, in stock. It may not be the knife that I started wanting, but I think it will serve me better than I need it to. Thanks a lot, and please continue to pour info into this thread as it would have been a great place for me to stumble upon during my searches.

As to the Deering suggestion, that black G10 Puukko that they had posted was almost impossibly good looking, but something about knowing that this guy makes his knives hammer on Anvil, with bark he collects himself makes it the only route I will go with the Puukkos. Either one of his, a Kullervo, or one of the others that are made this way. Might sound silly, but it is what it is.

Thanks again gentlemen!

Mike.

Also, EChoil and the other Puukko guys, with the money I saved on this purchase I think I'm going to buy a lower end Puukko to get a taste while I wait. Looking up the Marttiinis now to see, but Ahti is an option as well. I'll keep this thread updated, and am excited to see what I think.

Ragweed is where I have been looking, but because I had such specific models in mind I had sort of moved away from them. The Marttiini Carving and Black Lumberjack seem to be the ones I will be looking at.

The Marttinni mid-range (like the Lumberjack and Lynx) are nice, as are the higher end knives from them. Knifeworks has a good selection of these. If you didn't already have a high-end knife coming...

Ahti is good too, a lot of tool for the money.
Karesuando and Helle are excellent quality, but pushing the higher-end price range again.
Lapin Puukko offers good basic knives for not much money, as does Järvenpää and Brusletto.

Sorry, I have no experience with Wood Jewel or Roselli...

When it comes to saving money, there are few as frugal as Mora. Many of the molded plastic and rubberized handle models are very popular among the guys in the outdoor forum section, or you can get a perfectly functional wood handle knife for under $15.

For something heavier and inexpensive, the most steel for the money, check out the Condor selection. Woodlaw, Bushcraft, Bushlore, Sapien...

That wouldn't happen to be www.lamnia.com?

Highly recommended, excellent service! Go check out their scandi knives selection!

I just got my Fieldcrafter in the mail, and I'm blown away. I wish I could post photos on here.

Here's my two Battle Horse knives I just got in, O1 tool steel, true scandi grind, one is 8.5", the other is 9", Micarta handles, 5/32" thickness, very nice quality sheath's, both are awesome at 99 bucks each shipped, A LOT of knife for the money.

I want to get my first dedicated "bushcraft" knife. I was eyeing high end Puukkos, but don't love the idea of ordering from Finland, and would like to save a little money. I am currently eyeing the Bark River Bushcrafter, Spyderco Bushcrafter, or the Spyderco Puukko.

I've been a hunter and backpacker my whole life, but decided to finally get decent fixed blade, as I have been really pushing the limits of my folding knives lately.

I used the search feature but couldn't find much on any of these three knives.

Thanks in advance!

Mike.

have you checked out any of Survive! Knives offerings? 3.5 or the 4.1 might bea great option.

Ranger, they were having some monthly specials, and I'm assuming that's where he got his as well. I'm honestly havi trouble believing that this knife cost this little. I can't wait to start using it, and we have a trip coming up...

This site has an assortment of handmade knives from Scandinavia? And other people here have had good experiences?
I ordered two knives from there a couple of weeks ago. The service was great....they shipped fast and I had the knives in hand in less than 10 days.
