looking for at least 10 good buscraft projects to practice in a small space over the winter months the 2 I'm dreading most (due to dificulty are starting a bow drill fire, and net making) any help with these and ideas for others are appreciated. THanks

I recently made a model of a "swamp bed" out of small sticks and rags as ties.

I will post pics in a week or so. Model building provides excellent practice for the real thing.

Projects I need to work on:

Cordage
Bow drill fire
Minimal shelter building (small tools, no axe)
Fungus and mushroom identification
Toppo map and compass navigation skills (no GPS)

Look forward to all of them this winter and spring.;)

Mine are pretty much the same, Tarmix.

I'd like to learn to make some decent cordage, a bow drill, and get better with a map and compass.

I just took a map and compass couse like 3 weeks ago and already forgot most of it I'm supposed to give a navigation class for my nephews scout group this spring...no beter way to learn than by teaching I guess.

I'm much that same way. You can't hardly TELL me anything. I need to do it.

Another thing I forgot is wild edibles in my area. I'm going to pick up a book on N.W. wild edibles and take it with me on outings. I'd like to try and identify as many as possible. Should be fun.

It would be cool to organize these one at a time, have everyone that wants to participate take pics, and then post them.

when im out in the woods I love to make traps snares, deadfalls, etc. its good practice making various notches and trap triggers.

Pics of what ?

Whatever project.

I was thinking this. We'd setup a calendar, and designate certain weekends for certain projects. (Netmaking weekend for example.) Then come back and post pics and questions and hints based on our experiences.

I see what FB is saying.

Pics of:

Cordage
Bow Drills
Hand Made Nets
Fungus (tinder)
Wild edibles in your area
ECT.......

Great idea FB. We get enough interest and I bet we can make a sticky. Then all could come back with hints, and pics as you mentioned. Would be a great resource ehh!

Yea. There are lots of these I've not done. Chordage and netmaking for example. There are some I have done. Debris hut, flint and steel, etc. Be neat to do some experience trading.

Maybe we should set up a poll, gain some interest, and run with it.

What are we missing. I'm sure there is a lot. We can only do so many options on a poll, but we could come up with something to gain interest I'm sure.

Or keep it simple and gather all the skills here on this thread after a while, and create a new thread with calender to be a sticky.

Another skill I would like to look into:

Wild plants/roots with medicinal purposes. I have no clue, but would like to.

Devil's Advocate.

Be careful "teaching" people too much on forums. If someone hurts themselves making a trap, or eats a mushroom they misidentified, it could be bad news for the forum.

I think it's a great idea, just make sure you slap a warning on the subject line of the post.

Figure four deadfalls should be officially renamed to "2 man, finger crunching traps". Its really hard to get a heavy enough rock/tree to balance by your self and rarely works on the first attempt.
