Bushcraft UK - 2nds "heads-up"

From reading all the posts from the guys that have bought one of these knives, besides the cracks the most common complaint seems to be the handles shrink to the degree that you can feel the tang. Is this a stupid idea? - Couldn't you grind down the tang on a belt sander to match the handles? It would require a careful eye and some patience. Maybe even taping off the handles just in case. Is that possible? I know I bought a knife kit a while back that only needed handled and I was surprised how quickly the metal ground down.

Sal, thank you VERY much for posting this. I ordered mine last week and it arrived today in Hong Kong. It did have cracks in the handle but the rest was superb, so I have started fixing the cracks and will finish it with fine paper tomorrow.

A great buy!

Cheers;)

Well mine arrived today, I've got one scale uncracked, and one with a Y shaped crack that looks to be 0.3mm at most.
there does seem to be some scale shrinkage, but not much. I'll be able to build up a nice cyanoacrylate coat to match.
I'll give it a week or so to acclimatise before I do anything.

I got mine a couple of weeks ago. I filled the crack(s) with super glue and then coated the scales with several coats of formby's tung oil finish. You may be able to see the crack in the middle of the second pic. You might also be able to see the handle shrinkage. If you cannot, do not worry, as it is very slight. I guess I am one of the very fortunate ones to get a knife for a very reasonable price that is very close to being unblemished.

The scales on mine had shrunk away from the tang just enough to make you notice. One scale was pristine, the other had two cracks that fortunately stayed away from the rivets. After a week in WV both have closed completely. I have to look really hard to find them now.

It's a very nice blade, probably the best factory edge of any knife I've ever owned. Unfortunately I'm in the middle of a 12-on-2-off rotation so I haven't had the chance to really use it yet.

Mine's looking real good now. The moisture from our spring air and from working with the knife for a little while sealed up most of it, then I used some super glue to fill what was left. It works well for me now. And soon I'll be looking into a new sheath for it, I'm not to keen on the sheath design. Off to investigate now :)

After a day or so of sitting, I filled the crack with CA, and then gave the whole handle a coat.
this built up into a nice coat that has given a nice strong finish, sealed it from further damage, and made the scales flush with the tang.
It's now as perfect a finish as I could have hoped for from a regular production knife.
I can't tell where the crack was, and I know where it was.

Guess what came in a day early? Yep, got my Bushcraft knife. It is beautiful! I love it. One scale is absolutely fine with no cracks. The other has just one crack by the front pin. Not too shabby indeed! I'll keep an eye on it and see if it closes up in the humidity of the Midwest. Other than that it is just a little shrunk around the tang like everyone else's has been. Nothing a little sanding can't handle.

Question though for all you guys with these knives - do you mod the sheath at all? Seems with all the grommets on it that many of you could come up with some creative ideas.

My thanks to Canis for telling me to hurry up and order one!!
