Bushcraft UK - 2nds "heads-up"

I don't know as I am ready to get involved in this one, yet...

I will have to give it some thought...

Marion

Thanks for the heads up MDP. Funny, as soon as I hear "I need handle scales", you are the first person that comes to mind. It's no wonder though with all the great work you've done on the Mule Team projects. A BIG thank you for that too.

I've got one ordered.
I've been waiting for this knife for about 8 years, ever since i saw one of Chris's early prototypes at the Bushcraft UK summer meet up.
Cracks I can fix, re-scaling it also isn't a problem.
I just need to wait for it to arrive now.

Over the weekend, I was able to patch up my cracked wood scales nicely. I've also carefully ground the metal flush with the handle. Apart from the one spot where I went a tiny bit deeper than I intended, everything is flush and smooth. I sanded all the rough spots down with oiled 800 grit wet and dry sandpaper and refinished the entire handle with 2000 grit. Hopefully the oil kept any mold spores from getting into the air.

There are a few tiny cracks on the surface of the wood and I'm going to leave them alone for now. These appear to be a natural part of the wood and it adds a lot of character. In the mean time, I'm refinishing the handle by rubbing boiled linseed oil into the wood. I'm hoping that the oil will seal these cracks and the rest of the handle so they don't spread. I read somewhere that, "once a day for a week, once a week for a month, and once a month for a year" is the formula to follow. I'll post a follow up photo when it's done.

Bushie just came in the mail today! Happy to see that only one side of the handle has cracked near the front brass. Going to let it acclimate to see if it expands. After that it's time to get to work on the handle. Think I could get away with a ca black filler?

Well,

I don't have one yet...

But, as I often am a trafficker in information, I thought I would share this gem from the Spyderco Forums, with you all who have one, and might be considering fixing yours...

http://spyderco.com/forums/showpost.php?p=561291&postcount=142

".. BSI or Bob Smith industries makes some of the best CA out there. Their CA is triple distilled..."

"After inquiring with BSI as to properly using their products to fix this knife; I received the following today:

"...The initial application of CA should be with our Insta-Cure super-thin.
This will completely penetrate into the wood. Be sure to purchase some extra-fine extender tips or some teflon tubing for applying the thin CA. Without them, it's very easy to get the CA where you don't want it. You could just keep using the thin CA to completely fill the cracks, but you would be adding a lot of time to the process. After that first application, you are not going to get much more deep penetration, so for the second application you can immediately switch to
Insta-Cure+ gap filling or Maxi-Cure extra-thick and the cracks will be
filled. For wood that already has the black lines running through it, the black IC-2000 would be perfect for the second application. Insta-Set accelerator can be sprayed on the surface about one minute after the second application and it would be ready for sanding. The CA should sit for at least an hour before you do final polishing. Contractors who do the installation of granite countertops will mix in granite dust, produced when they cut it, on top of the Insta-Cure or Insta-Cure+ that they have applied to cracks. They even use the CA for bonding the granite pieces together...."

Also, I thought I would mention, that you can get black CA, so it will match the colours in your handle, maybe even look seamless when finished...

I gathered that little factoid from the same thread...

Enjoy!

That's good info, Marion. Thanks for sharing. I already applied some regular CA to mine, but I'll remember that for future projects.

Thanks Sal for such a great opportunity. :D

I have just received mine and the only thing I can say is, bravo!

This is by far one of the best knifes I have ever got from Spyderco. When I saw this knife first introduced, I was not even thinking about getting one. Since this opportunity came up I could not help but join the crowed. I am one happy customer. Handles are a bit cracked in places but that did not take from the loveliness of the knife. Thank you Sal for such a beauty.

You seem to be the quiet type. 2 posts in 4 years!!

Marion I sure hope you decide to make some handles for these. I just shot you an email as well. The wood on these is really nice but wood just really isnt my thing and just doesnt work in Alaska. I love the blade shape and how thick these are. I have seen some bushcraft people use fatwood as a handle material. That would be kinda cool to try I guess.

I will respond to your email as well...

But, I wanted to respond to the idea of a fatwood handle on the forums... I don't know if I would trust a handle made that way, as it seems to me that the resin in the wood could interfere with the epoxy, and you could get handles that would separate from the tang...

To the idea of myself making handles... I want to say this....

I really appreciate the nomination, and the thought behind it. And I am not saying 'No', but so everyone knows.... I won't be able to take this kind of thing on for awhile, at least 2-3 months, at the very minimum.... I make sheaths, and I have made a couple knives out of my mentor's shop, but I don't have a shop set-up for making knives, and it will be awhile before I am ready for that. So, if you want to wait for me, then I will definitely appreciate the business....

But, until then, and if you need this done right away....

I would suggest Phillip Dobson of Montana.... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/member.php?u=249941 for Wood Handles, his work is phenomenal.... truly stunning...

And Tom Krein of Arkansas... http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/member.php?find=lastposter&t=668630 for Micarta Handles (or other synthetics), Tom makes a mean handle and you can see examples of his work, on my site about the Spyderco Mules... http://muleprojects.blogspot.com/

Thank You All,
Marion

My Spyderco bushcraft arrived at last! All I can say is Wow! I love this knife. I will make this one my EDC whenever I am in the bush. I have 100 acres of bush on my farm here in Victoria Australia, so I get to do that often.
A big thanks to Sal and the guys.
Shane.:D:D:D

Does anyone have an idea if Spyderco is close to, if not already, sold out of these knives? I'd really like to get one but figured they would go really quick, despite the handle issue. But that's just me.......

Online shows about 37 left, you should probably order one fairly soon.

Wow Canis. 37? Where did you see that, buddy?

Never mind, I cracked their code......

Yeah, you just put in a high number in the quantity. Also, they may have more for the phone orders which are not included in the online order inventory.
