Bushcrafter broke his BK9

I think that's the first I've seen a KA-BAR 9 snap like that.

Thats very strange. With the hell I've put mine through I never thought I would see one in two pieces

That is mine. Thanks for posting the link up here since I am not real active here at this forum. Figured that I would go ahead and pop in though on this since thread I was the one using it when it broke.

The knife broke when I was chopping a downed log. The BK9 has a reputation as a great chopper and I have used this one for that task plenty in the past year or so that I have owned it. I was really really surprised by the break, especially the location of the break since I would have thought the extra material at the ramp would make that part sturdier. My plan was to contact Ka-Bar Monday to see what they had to say.

Since posting this thread I have had a couple folks contact me privately and tell me they have seen similar breaks on this knife. I have been told that the roll stamp seems to always be were they break. I'm not sure if the stamp has anything to do with it or not. I am no metallurgist.

If anyone has seen this or has info on a break of this nature I'd be interested to hear it. As I understand it the new BK9s have laser etched logos rather than roll stamps which would prevent this on future knives.

Thanks,

Lerch

I responded on your thread there. I have seen Camillus era BK9's break, and it was supposedly due to the roll stamping. First KA-BAR 9 I've seen break. They will more than likely be interested in seeing the broken 9. I'm sure they'll replace it for you.

Hehe. When you use a tool hard breakage is always a possibility that you have to accept. I maintain my tools but I use them hard. An axe would have been a better choice for chopping that log but I have used the BK9 for the task before and always found it worked well and much easier to backpack with than a large axe. I still really like the Becker knives. Never leave home without a Remora that I got from Josh hanging around my neck and a BK14 always rides in my laptop bag. They are a good tool for the price.

Here's a photo of it, btw:

Ethan,

I really appreciate the quick response on this. I hadn't even had a chance to contact anyone officially about it. I have been a fan of the Becker line and continue to be so. This great quick response serves to further impress me. I will contact you this week. If you wouldn't mind sending me PM on the best way to reach you I'd appreciate it.

Thanks again!
Lerch

Edited to add: Big thanks to my brothers from over at BCUSA that thought to bring this over here. Thanks guys.

This thread is the quintessential reason why I am a Beckerhead and loyal to the brand. What knife brand, other than high dollar customs, can you have the designer of the knife pop up on the forums and say 'call me Thursday' about a busted blade. That's unbelievable. I've never seen someone stand behind his products the way Uncle E does. Let's be honest, he doesn't have to do that, but he does, that's impressive. This is why my Becker collection is approaching double digits and will only continue to grow.

Lerch - Ethan is on the road for the next few days (and I'm pretty sure his PMs are full) but if you call or email Kabar customer service they will take care of you. He actually called and asked me to post this while he's driving across Nebraska. (I also responded to your BCUSA thread)
