Bushcrafter broke his BK9

i heard tell that in the old dark days of Camillus, the heat treats might not have been so hot... in fact, perhaps not so much.

Is that a double negative?

I can assure you they were consistently between marshmallows & glass! :p

I keep coming back to the thread to see the pic of the BK9 halves... Cant believe it

Tell me about it. I just stood there staring at the broken knife in my hand. LOL I couldn't believe it either.

Does this problem ever come up with the Kabar BK9s?

Yep. That happened to be a Ka-bar 9. Don't think its to much of a problem now with the new laser etched one's tho.

I'd still depend on it to get the job done.

Like Dexwithers said this broken one was a KaBar.

Here's a photo of it, btw:

I'm AMAZED no one has noticed this yet! The reason for the break is obvious! Someone stripped the coating off the blade! Everyone knows the secret formula coating is what makes Becker blades legendary for their toughness! ;) I don'twant to hear any more roll-stamp theories.....especially since all my Beckers are older, roll-stamped models (with their blade coating still intact I might add!)

I would carry the BK9 so I could always say, "That's not a knife, [pull Bk9 smile and say] now that's a knife."

I'm sure it was designed for countless tasks. I feel that if I give my explanation, it would be a futile act. I'm not going to change anybody's mind on how to use the Bk9. I'll only have to argue my usage for it, again and again "till I'm blue in the face".

Use the BK9 for what ever you want to use it for. Fillet it and fish fry it, it's your blade, do what you like. Beckers are fairly low in cost and are hard working tools, so have at it.

Duder

if you would like, i (we) can have the designer/maker/etc of the BK9 TELL YOU in his own words, what it was designed for

i will assume, in advance, it will include tool, knife, hard use, chopping, etc.

cuz really, while your opinion is valuable, we can just cut to the chase on this one, the final word, end of discussion, done :D

which would also include "use it hard, put it up wet, if you break it within normal designated usage that is not deemed abuse, we will cover your assets"

or something like that. great warranty.

and we'll note, that KaBar has sometimes, and Ethan has MANY times, covered a warranty issue, on a CAMILLUS product. now. seriously. what more do you need to hear?

Grind the broken edge, make that sucker a reusable tool!
There ya go! Both parts could be saved really.

I was gonna say, 710 just did a project like that for someone.

Winter's coming... I would grind the tang stub into a chisel, keep the original handle on it, and have the coolest windshield-scraper/ice-remover thingamabob on the block

I'm very impressed by this post. Becker stands behind their product. Although I recently bought a BK7 a few days ago ( my 1st Becker ever), I will be buying more in the very near future.

Hey guys I just wanted to post an update. Yesterday I got a delivery in the mail. I got a brand new BK9. The Lazer etched version. They also shipped me the newer style BK9 sheath back. I didn't even include the sheath when I shippped this to them. I now have 2 BK-9 Nylon sheaths and a Custom leather one. The customer service of this company is amazing. I cannot begin to tell you all how impressed I am.

While I cannot lie, I was disappointed by the breakage, I do believe they have identified the fault and eliminated it from current production knives. I will have to beat on this a bit before it gains my full trust again but I am confident it will.

Huge thanks go out to Ethan, Ka-Bar and chad1043 for bringing this up over here.

Thanks guys!,
Lerch
