Bushcrafter broke his BK9

Interesting.........

Things break, but that shouldn't have.

One of the biggest reasons from getting away from the stamping (not roll stamped, just stamped btw) was haveing to retreat the blade after it the stamping was applied. Could be the reason.

I know Toooj is gonna want to see that one.

Right on the stamp! That would suck to be stranded on a trip without a knife. Good thing I always bring 3 :)

I don't understand. Camillus was stamping them when already hard, then having to re-HT them? Pretty sure I'm missing something here...

Sidneywas not overly exciting.... Which means I spent very little,,,,,,.... I pulled into St. Joe about nine-thirty........ Loooong day...... The drivers seat in the Tundra is freaking amazingly comfy........

Not the case!
The Becker blades were stamped soft.
Because they were laser cut blades, they were annealed & stress relieved prior to stamping, as the edges were hardened by the laser.
Failure to do the anneal & stress relieving prior to stamping almost guaranteed breaking as the stamping would form micro-cracks.
Even with these additional steps, the stamping did cause failures.
Eliminating the stamping of the blades is the only way to be sure.

Thank you, I understand now :)

Where else could you get the support of the fans and users of the knives, the creator and designer Ethan Becker, and Mr. Gibbs himself? This is way too cool.

Glad I could add some clarity to it James.
I had long tried to abolish stamping on large Carbon Steel fixed blades at Camillus Cutlery Company.
I consistantly failed! :o
Even in near perfect conditions, stamping damages blades!

Fortunately at A.G. Russell for large Carbon Steel fixed blades , we deep etch the marks; best of both worlds!

That has long been my suspicion. I electro-chemically etch all my stuff after HT. As far as I can tell it's the least-invasive way to permanently mark a blade.

Sorry for the thread drift! But thanks again for explaining the whys/hows.

Mr Becker, I met you a couple of years ago. You stopped by my dealership for a few minutes asking about the Tundra. I'm in Central alabama. Glad you are enjoying your Tundra! They are great trucks aren't they.

I remember getting your name and asking what you did for a living. You said "I make knives". I was thinking "dang, seems like I heard of this guy before!" Anyway, if you are down this way again please stop by and have a cup of coffee. On me:D

I was surprised to see the BK-9 broken. This had made me wonder which of the current blades are roll stamped versus laser etched. I believe my BK-16 with the new coating is laser etched, but my BK-7 appears to be roll stamped and I just bought it a couple months ago. If the "numbers" or words are deeply indented into the blade, is it roll stamped like a firearm?

all of the current production blades are laser etched.
sounds like you got new-old stock on your BK7.
