I finally stayed alert enough to scoop up four Bushcrafter model SAKs from Roger Remund (or Swiss Bianco) from this limited run of them.

They arrived yesterday -- two blue and two olive drab. Man are they beauties! The construction is flawless.

This is a variation of the Farmer that I've always wanted -- one dedicated to woodworking. It's two layers instead of three. It has the hasp, wood saw, main blade, and "out the front" awl of the Farmer, but the combo screwdriver and bottle or can opener blade layer is gone.

This makes for a survival or backup knife that's as sturdy and capable as the Farmer, but without an ounce of extra "fat."

These will be replacing the Lumberjacks on my hiking survival keychains. I think the Lumberjack, with a combination screwdriver and can/bottle opener blade is better suited to urban survival, and that's where my Lumberjacks will go, woodsy name notwithstanding.

Congrats Bear,I just scored a green one.I was torn between the bushcrafter & lumberjack...the awl won out.

after much waiting, I finally got one as well :)

What's so special that makes it a 'bushcraft' SAK.. Looks like another sak to me. Dare I ask how much more that usual these cost?

I understand people have a love for SAK, but isn't a leatherman type multi tool a much more viable option? It seems they are much more versatile and some even come with locking blades. And yes, I do realize that you cannot put a leatherman on your keychain.
As the other poster stated, where do you purchase these and how much do they cost? Who knows, maybe I'll be converted.

it's basically a Swiss Army Farmer that has one layer removed (screw drivers) this makes it thinner/lighter

they are a custom run (may still be available???) done by Swiss Bianco http://www.swissbianco.com/, afaik they are the only company that has been allowed by Victoronox to "customize" their knives

I think the knife was $58 (don't quote me on that though)

they (SwissBianco) have a forum on this site that details how to get their newsletters, ordering, info etc

leatherman's are nice, but tend to be more geared for urban settings (pliers, screw drivers, etc)- this is a pretty plane jane arrangement- knife/saw/awl- things that are pretty useful in the woods (w/ nothing extra)

I wish it included one more smaller blade, like on the hiker and camper models. That'd make a perfect woods folder.

ETA: I'm now on the newsletter list :thumbup:

they had one like that some time back, can't remember what is was called though

Sorry, but to me, it just looks like a regular SAK. I don't see any enhanced "bushcraft" functions. The blade doesn't appear to lock, so I'm not even sure you can run a firesteel along the spine without the danger of folding the blade.

Can someone let me know what makes this a bushcrafter, besides the thinness?

btw, I own 2 Swiss Bianco's knives, so don't think I'm bashing him.

for same reason one of their models is called the lumberjack- none really :)

I do think for woods bumming for a very light package, you've got the bases covered; the awl sparks a steel very well, well enough no reason to even think about using the blade- the saw works pretty well too (given it's size limitations obviously)

I have a +B Bushcrafter and really like it.

Nothing against Roger but I wish Vic would make it a standard model to reduce the cost.

While I still get the newsletter, & think his alox knives look awesome, I won't be sending Roger any more of my hard earned money.

there are some instructions posted somewhere on how to convert a Farmer into a "Bushcrafter"- basically you're removing a layer and then re-assembling/re-pinning it- I was afraid of screwing it up so I just bought one instead :)

Rotokids shop on Felinevets SOSAK site has the tools and pins.

I've wanted to try it but have the same fears.

If the right knife comes along I might try it some day.

^ there was a fellow that was doing that kind of custom work, but evidently he hung up his hat a year or two ago- appears no one has stepped up to fill the void (my take was the guy was quite busy customizing SAKs)

Think maybe that was Scibeer? ....... I liked the Stalker he made that was a Farmer with scissors and hard anodized scales.

I would be a cool hobby ...... not super expensive to get into.
