Most of mine have been what I call utility sharp at best which means they will scrape hair but I don't really care because I sharpen all of mine to my standards anyway. There have been a couple of exceptions the Bony AD being one of them.I don't care if a knife comes razor sharp as long as it can be sharpened and stays sharp

I think the way it goes is sort of like this.

If you start getting razor sharp $50.00 to $100.00 knives, then most of the folks making $200.00 knives fall into line doing the same.

People have gotten used to that over that last ten years or so.

Now when the people that have been getting Razor edges on $100.00 knives buy a $400.00 knife, the expectation is there that the knife will be sharp.

I remember when a not shaving sharp new Busse knife fresh from the factory was a rare thing.

That seems now to be in the past.

Still, it seems to be what you got to go though in order to get the steel of choice, and that steel is important to me.

Usually.

Generally, all of mine have come is various states of edge sharpness. Most come very sharp, only a few relatively dull.

But......I like the challenge of making them razor sharp! Learning some good honing skills is part of the fun of ownership....and a useful skill as well.

I only own a few Busses, but of the 9, only the Sar5 and the SFNO-2008SE came with a really sharp edge. I think that the SSSS has been an improvement. The Sar5 didn't really impress me until I cut myself with it. In my limited experience, only Spyderco and Benchmade come with edges that don't need some sort of TLC from the factory.

We have received knives from everywhere at varying degrees of sharpness. A knife can be very sharp, but not as sharp as we might like. In most cases, Busse and bussekin knives included, a few strokes on the strop or steel is all that is needed to get it where we want it. We don't consider it an issue.

Also whether it is the edge that is not properly aligned or the blade geometry being obtuse is 2 different things. A fatty GW is never going to be sharp even if the edges are perfect because it has obtuse geometry. Spyderco is one of the few companies that has both excellent geometry and takes the time to put a decent edge.

The new Stainless Rat HC's had well aligned edges but were very obtuse. That steel is much harder to sharpen than any other Busse steel.

The idea that obtuse geometry isnt sharp doesnt make sense. Itll cut, just needs more pressure as it pushes through. Even a zamboni blade is sharp as hell.

Well, I think the opinions vary as far as the importance of a knife being hair poppin sharp outa the box. It also sounds as if maybe the inspectors might be passing knives in a hurry to fill orders (NOT THAT WE ARE IMPATIENT BUYERS! LOL!). Sounds like there are a bunch of Busses out there that showed up needing edge help and Im gathering that the lack of consistency of the blade sharpness is a newer phenomena. AGAIN, I love ALL of my Busses new and old! I would hope that they would not need to be touched up out of the wrapper as they aint cheap! Im not interested in sending a box full of knives back to be resharpened when I can do it myself, I would just hope I wouldnt have to in the first place.

Hey skunk does that mean you will be getting the Air Bleeder in stock soon :)

I agree there has been a larger variance in degree of sharpness than I'd sometimes like. The good thing is knowing if it really bothered me I could get it fixed with their great customer service. The odd thing is, it always seems like the larger knives come significantly sharper than the EDC knives I have. The sharpest knife I've gotten being the FBMLE. I could shave with it if I didn't fear losing my head!

beefangusbeef's comment is what Ive also found! The larger the knife, the sharper the edge!!! All my FBM variants are like razors right outa the wrapper!

My Sarsquatch CE came very sharp, easily the sharpest Busse I ever bought. My new Skinney ASH-1 had a semi-edge. That's what I call it when it looks like someone started to sharpen it, setting the bevel angle and then quit. I do like it when I get new knives that are very sharp. It impresses me. It isn't a big problem when they don't come sharp. I know how to sharpen a knife. But I wish all my Busses came as sharp as that Squatch CE.

reading all these comments has me confused and probably killed more brain cells than all the booze i have ever drank...

and that's a lot

Consensus is that consitstency of the bevel and the sharpness has slipped. As orders increase they get behind and they are trying to get em out the door to their patient :p patrons! LOL!! We are very patient customers arent we???
