Busse Blow Out

A couple of weeks ago I ordered my first "Busse". The sage Chopweiler with tan canvas micarta scales arrived about a week and a half ago. I was very impressed by it's subtle desert colors, massive, well-honed blade and comfortable, multi-position grip. This Chopweiler is the first heavy field knife that I have liked well enough to know immediately it would be a keeper.

I should have been satisfied and quit while I was ahead, but noooOOOooo. The Busse bug had already bit. I then proceeded to order a sage FF Battle Mistress, a Dog Father and a Rat Mastiff. Here's a pic:

From left to right, that's the Chopweiler, Rat Mastiff, Dog Father and FF Battle Mistress. I am as impressed by the Rat Mastiff as I was by the Chopweiler, and those two blades will be the users of the group. The Rat Mastiff is the only blade from the group that has been used previously; I could not find any new ones available. The RM is my Goldilocks chopper; not to big or too small, not too heavy or too light, etc.

Even though I have now depleted my discretionary account, I'm still looking for one more Busse. That would be the CG Battle Mistress with standard (non-magnum) scales. I'm hoping the .25" blade will yield a less formidable chopper than the FF that might be more readily carried into the field.

Reviews will follow as time permits. I'm sure this new set of blades will keep me busy in the woods for a good long while. :D:thumbup:

That is some serious hardware you got there! I hope I don't catch the Busse bug, my wallet is taking a beating on the custom bug I got right now.

I got BIT too Bill. I got a Sage FFBM also as well. Pic.

I haven't bitten the bullet yet and gotten a Busse, but I want one and keep telling myself that if I buy one then it'll be my "ultimate knife" and I won't have to keep spending money on other knives. I know that I'm just trying to fool myself and will continue to buy many more knives for their steel, design, specialty use, etc., but if I continue to live my delusion I might be able to justify the high price of a Busse.

I would like to get a good chopper and then a smaller knife to go along with it. I was watching a Hoods Woods video on trapping and his Busse combo made me drool. I'm not sure what he has, but it looks like a Battle Mistress and possibly the little knife that Fiddleback has in the middle picture at the bottom. Not meaning to hijack this thread but what would any of you recommend as a good Busse combo that is readily available?

Awe man it's not a bug it is a virus...Scrapyard:YK,DMLe,DM,DF Swamprat:Chopweiler,RMD,SW,SW,HC Busse: SAR5 ,SAR5,FBM
and still looking......Congrats on the infection nice Blades

I think a great woods combo would be my ASH1 (ugly green coated blade under FFBM in pic) and that harey carey, or cultellus (bottom pic).

BTW, Bill, as your friend I'm going to tell you that the ASH1 I got is my favorite one. The ergonomics on that ugly assed hog are flatly awesome. It will certainly chop, but has a comfortable carryable feel. They're still selling them directly for $297. People are buying them for 297 and selling them for 350 all the time around here. WTF? Get one from Busse before they stop selling them. (Thats the secret to buying Busse's BTW. If you don't get them first hand you get scalped.)

Andy I have to say you really surprised me on that one. I didn't figure you the type to like Busse's so much......

Sir, I can tell you from personal experience that your CGFBM theory is correct.

On the other hand, I'm one of the 'odd ones' who finds the FFBM a handy chopper. Maybe it's all those years climbing and caving ... ;)

I'd be living on the street if I ever get the Busse Bug. But at least i'd have the FFBM to keep me company!

Yea, its a new thing for me. Really, Busse's were a hard sell for me. 1. I don't like coatings on blades. 2. I hate choils. On monster blades I can stand them, but on small knives I think a choil means poor design. IMO edges on small blades should come right to the handle so you can get leverage for hard notching type cuts.

But! You've got to consider the fact that this company is a GREAT American success story. And that they're doing this with American know how and American workers. And that the folks that follow them are great people. This is common in the knife community. And its the same with Busse. The folks I met at Blade show were welcoming and generous and trusting, and really great to hang around with.

Anyway, I gave them a try and I like them a lot.

wow!
nice scores but....
I hate you!!! :D
(lol, I wish my busse collection was that big)

I Love my DFLE, it's a great all around knife for heavy chopping, machette work, and even fine work.
and because of the res-c handles, I can chop all day without blisters.
:D
thanks for the pics.

I'd like to know how the dogfather compares to the rat mastiff actually, if you could maybe let me know when you get around to using your dogfather.
:D

Very nice knives. I do not own a Busse or Swamp Rat yet, but I do have a Scrap Yard Yard Keeper coming my way.
