Busse Blow Out

I haven't bitten the bullet yet and gotten a Busse, but I want one and keep telling myself that if I buy one then it'll be my "ultimate knife" and I won't have to keep spending money on other knives. I know that I'm just trying to fool myself and will continue to buy many more knives for their steel, design, specialty use, etc., but if I continue to live my delusion I might be able to justify the high price of a Busse.

I would like to get a good chopper and then a smaller knife to go along with it. I was watching a Hoods Woods video on trapping and his Busse combo made me drool. I'm not sure what he has, but it looks like a Battle Mistress and possibly the little knife that Fiddleback has in the middle picture at the bottom. Not meaning to hijack this thread but what would any of you recommend as a good Busse combo that is readily available?

Sounds like a good combo. That would be the Game Warden at the bottom of Andy's pic. I might go a little larger and pick the Active Duty.

Er.....that is if I had any funds left to buy Busses. :p

BTW, Bill, as your friend I'm going to tell you that the ASH1 I got is my favorite one. The ergonomics on that ugly assed hog are flatly awesome. It will certainly chop, but has a comfortable carryable feel. They're still selling them directly for $297. People are buying them for 297 and selling them for 350 all the time around here. WTF? Get one from Busse before they stop selling them. (Thats the secret to buying Busse's BTW. If you don't get them first hand you get scalped.)

Thanks Andy. Well, maybe TWO more blades. ;)

Sir, I can tell you from personal experience that your CGFBM theory is correct.

On the other hand, I'm one of the 'odd ones' who finds the FFBM a handy chopper. Maybe it's all those years climbing and caving ... ;)

No doubt that FFBM could split the skull of a cave bear.

wow!
nice scores but....
I hate you!!! :D
(lol, I wish my busse collection was that big)

I Love my DFLE, it's a great all around knife for heavy chopping, machette work, and even fine work.
and because of the res-c handles, I can chop all day without blisters.
:D
thanks for the pics.

I'd like to know how the dogfather compares to the rat mastiff actually, if you could maybe let me know when you get around to using your dogfather.
:D

The dogfather (20.6oz/15.25"L/.25"T) is very similar to the rat mastiff (21.6oz/15.25"L/.25"T) in weight and overall dimensions. However, the dogfather is a much more weight forward design (due to hidden tang and lighter weight res-c handle). Consequently, I would expect the DF to be the better chopper for wood and other tough materials. However, the RM, with its balance point about 1/2" in front of the scales, will have a faster blade and may be a bit more versatile. I think it boils down to personal preference. My situation is that, based on air chopping (;)), I prefer the feel of the already used RM, and am therefore very reluctant to do a field test with the still pristine DF. They're both excellent blades that are so similar it's hard to justify using both in the field. :)

thanks HDW, I was thinking that myself.
(that knives with micarta handles are more "versatile")
although I love the feel of res-c and find it pretty tough I like micart on some knives.
:D

Thank you ,well I just ordered my second Chopweiler Green black G10,I can not wait for it,anyday now.....it will match my RMD:thumbup:

Looking forward to seeing the new addition. Despite my protestations about a depleted discretionary account, I acted on Andy's tip and ordered a desert-olive/tan ASH1 from the company store. Price sure beats the exchange. I'm still looking for a CGBM, so I guess I'm into the grocery money now. :D Oh well, wouldn't hurt to lose a few pounds.

I've never lead you wrong on knives. You'll like that ASH1!

HDW,
did you see my post with the SAR5 & FFBM, breaking the bank...Ouchy !

Yes, and I've developed a strange attraction for the SAR5. Didn't like it the first time I saw one, but you and Andy have got me considering it's virtues. No choil on a smaller knife is a feature I appreciate.

You were dead on. For some reason I had overlooked the basic model when I visited the store earlier and was scared off by the price for the LE. Can't wait to get the new SH!

The secret to Busse buying is to go direct. I paid 118.00 for my Harey Carey at BS. They're going for 190 now in the exchange.:D
