Busse Bushcraft?

Hunter,
I may need to broaden my horizon's as I have not tried some of the steel's you have listed. I got a feeling from Jerry's post of late, he has some surprises coming. I am confident, I won't be dissapointed, as this man is clearly on a mission. :D

I love INFI but some of the newer powder steels are just a whole different world of performance! The downside is you have to be much more cautious when using them to avoid chipping and actually breaking your knife which can happen with some of the high hardness high carbide steels.

Im really excited to see the higher hardness INFI! And to get my Basic 4's! The B4 will probably be my go to knife until my custom Nessmucks are done.

INFI is a good performer in small knives when compared to traditional steels like O1 and 1095. In fact it's alot better in my experience. But the problem is INFI is very expensive and is really designed to shine in a hard use knife that is going to be taking impacts and lateral stress.

For a chopper, INFI is amazing because it's characteristics of high toughness, relatively high hardness, and resistance to chipping are characteristics that make a great chopping blade.

But for a small knife that's not going to be taking impacts and is primarily going to be pushed through wood, high toughness and lower wear resistance is not going to make am ideal bushcrafter.

INFI still performs very well in a small knife, I'm happy with it but compared to the new powered steels INFI can't match their performance.

Take a steel like M390 run at 62 and it will blow INFI out of the water in a small blade because it is a high hardness, high wear resistance steel that is meant for repeated cutting and slicing, not taking a beating like INFI.

If you are going to get a custom bushcrafter made I'd get a steel that has properties that will lend to the task.

INFI is very good, but m4, m390. S90v etc are on a different level.

This IS logical. Haven't tried it out yet ... but it IS logical.

Calling out The Janitor!!! ;) :D :D

... cool stuff in the works with INFI NQ
Boss Hog, what is the definition of that "NQ" appellation? I don't recall hearing that INFI NQ term before, so can you give me any info or tidbits on the difference between regular INFI and INFI NQ? Or link to previous info on the NQ version of INFI? Many thanks in advance.

Good stuff. . .

We have some cool stuff in the works with INFI NQ

Should make a HUGE difference in pure slicing. . .

Jerry

Nice! ...a few slicers, a nuke-proof folder, and we can keep all our needs in the family!!!:thumbup::D

...interested in more info regarding "NQ" as well...

Today Busse=abuse
I don't know if a new INFI will be a good IDEA, people will beat the crap out of it just because its a BUSSE.
You need a few truck of replacement on stand-by......Time will tell....

So what I am seeing is INFI NQ is the hot girl at the bar that never goes home with you so you settle for O1, S30V, 1095 etc. I just hope she delivers in the next few months before I end up being some steel's "babies daddy".

You have to make INFI NQ jealous of the other steels by acting like you're not interested in what she has to offer. Start with a neg like telling her that the patina she's developed is probably appealing to some people. Then start cutting fuzz sticks with 420 stainless. INFI NQ will get jealous, and become less inaccessible. Boom. Now you have a Bushcraft knife in the hottest steel around.

Don't worry, I'm saying all of this in good fun and truly believe that all steels should be treated with respect. Except for 420j. She's a skank.

Every single quality maker of the Woodlore-style knife is backed up for years. I wonder if Jerry would consider a Bussekin knife based on this design. It would open a whole new collector-user to these excellent knives. How about some Bussekin names for a bushcraft knife - knottywood, bushrat, scrap wood, etc. I'd love to see the new INFI NQ put to the test in a good woods knife. Now that is something I'd get excited about.

I don't think the performance of INFI would be with the price for a custom bushcrafter.

INFI is the best steel out there for a chopper but for a small knife it's very average.

If you want an extremely high performance bushcrafter talk to some of the custom makers here and have one made out of a super steel like M390 or S90v.

I'm currently getting a custom made in K390. It should blow away everything I've ever used.

I don't agree that infi is merely average in a small woodcraft type blade. I find infi dulls a little quicker perhaps than the few powder steels i've used, but the same property that makes infi so tough, it's malleability, makes it so easy to bring it back to razor sharpness. Instead of steeling with a smooth steel which works very well, i simply draw the knife with a good amount of force, through some wood a few times, realigning the edge. It sounds too good to be true, but it works really well for me.
I carry and extensively use my game wardens, mean street, aba3 for woodcraft type chores and they very rarely need abrasive sharpening.

So it has been a year since INFI NQ was mentioned. Tease tease tease..... I'm suffering from "Blue INFI" I need a release.

I dig the scrapyard scrapmax with elmax for this role.

good point. i almost forgot how much i like them, especially the small fat one. 360 i think. i need some sheaths for them, i've only used them so far for fishing and in the kitchen. they need some woods time. and what a freakin bargain they are. i may have to rehandle one as well. mortise tang smooth micarta scrapmax!

I have the scrapmax 340 and it is great for cleaning deer. Love the handle, if it was as thick as my CABSLE (between .13 & .16) even with the choil I would not need another blade ever.

I would like to see a .15 scrapmax at 4" long in either elmax at 61 or INFI NQ at 62..... I'll sell all other fixblades to see this one
