I've had the best luck taking satin finished knife pics outside, in the shade, or better yet on an overcast day. Rotate the blade so that the edge is in the direction of the sun and it will light up the edge as well. . . . No flash necessary!

Don't use a flash... take pics outside with the sun behind you. Make sure the lens is clean.
