I commissioned a custom knife with Busse Combat on approx 11/16/02. The order was facilitated through a Mr. Marc Fratello. Mr. Fratello informed me that the cost of this knife would be 1300.00. Mr Fratello then informed me that I would have to give my credit card number as well as half of the cost upfront.I agreed to these terms. I sent a money order for 700.00 to Busse Combat. The money order was received and signed for by a J. Busse in Wauseon OH 43567 on November 30, 2002 , 11:43 am. I also gave my credit card information to Mr. Fratello via email. In an email I received on 11/30/02 Mr Fratello informed me that the knife was to be completed in 4-6 months. I have sent several emails inquiring about the status of my order to Busse Combat as well as to Mr Fratello, all have gone unanswered .In two weeks from this date 6/4/03 I will have no choice but to consider my 700.00 stolen.

Thanks and All the Best

He always does, and will more than likely respond here when word gets to him of this thread. Things got pretty hectic for him due to the war effort and military orders, they took priority.

You will get it and it will be worth the wait.

I am sorry to hear about your negative experience L. Uebelein. I think you stated the facts very clearly without any flaming and I commend you for that. I hope all works out. I also imagine this issue will be addressed here by Mr Busse and everything will be taken care of in an orderly manner.

I would also recommend calling the shop. I can promise you that no one has stolen from you. Jerry and Company are good people and I am sure it can be resolved to your satisfaction if you will just call him direct.

Hey guys, I was just made aware of this thread by an email from someone else who had read it earlier.

I had already made contact with Leo earlier this morning and all is well. Apparently his emails were getting caught in my spam filter, which I only check once a week.

Speaking of spam filters catching things it shouldn't, you wouldn't have believed how many customer orders we had caught by it when we offered the "Tali-Whacker"!!!!! Everyone was flagged as a XXX rated offer because a lot of the subject lines read, "I want a Taliwhacker!"

Thanks,

Jerry Busse

It has been eons since I have been away from the forums, like at least 2 years, but I can personally vouch (like he needs it!) for Busse as he made things right for me even when I did not complain and he realized that he was delayed in getting me the knives I ordered which are still going strong by the way after seeing 120 degree weather, lots of sand and bad body odor comming from walking bed sheets. Did I mention I hate sand.

Jerry, as usual, has way more demand than he can keep up with, through no fault of his own, except the great product that he makes. Hey, I had to wait 14 months for two Randalls and over 1.5 years for a custom Carson blade, so quality and demand equals waiting time.

Hopefully, he can keep from damaging his own hands for some time as he did a while back.

Good to hear that everything worked out. Leo told me about the knife he ordered and I can't wait to see it. Leo - I'm assuming you'll be bringing it to the 6/22 NJCKA meeting and I'll get my hands on it then :) It sounds like it should be an impressive piece.

UPDATE- Jerry emailed me. He seems like a class act and he stated that the knife was coming along nicely. Im very happy about this. Thanks again Jerry!

I hope so Chuck and I look forward to the next meeting. The first one was alot of fun.

In an email I recieved on 6/10/03 I was informed by Mr. Busse that the knife would be "kicked out" 8-10 days from that date and that the knife was "looking mean". I have not heard anything from Busse Combat since then (6/10/03).

All the Best!

That's a shame. Busse Combat makes a great knife but it seems like they have a problem telling customers the truth.

Leo, I was just made aware of this thread. Sorry for any miscommunication.

Here's the exact wording of my email.

"We're leaving for the BLADE Show tomorrow morning (June 11). We will be back in approx. 8 - 10 days. I will kick it out as soon as I return."

I should have been clearer on my statement "I will kick it out as soon as I return".

My statement does make it sound like it would be shipped immediately after I returned when in reality I meant that I would be resuming work on it immediately upon my return.

Sorry for any confusion and thanks for your patience,

Jerry

The wording may have been confusing but your actions are pretty straightforward. Being late on a custom order is not acceptable if you are holding $700 of the customer's money and have not appropriately communicated the delays to the customer.

Just saw this thread and this tune sounds very familiar to me....except I have 1100.00 already invested in my custom. I've dealt with custom knife makers in the past all of whom were very good in communicating any delays or complications. I've been told I'd get pics over the past 6-7 months and have not gotten any ?? This isn't really my style posting here in GB&U but I start to get irritated when e-mails aren't returned, I can never get a definite delivery date or the pics I was told I would get are never sent. Maybe I'm out of line with this post but I feel it had to be said.

Juan,

I know you would like to have pics taken of your knife as it is being made but it is somtimes not as easy as it sounds. Often, I promise a pic of a knife and when I take it, the pic makes the knife look pretty bad because of the state of finish it is in. Simply put, the pic just does not do the piece justice. I'll try to take some more pics over the next few days and if they come out showing a fair representation of the piece I will send them along.

If I had sent the previous pics, you would have most likely been very disappointed in the look of your piece.

Now, on the other hand, if you'll promise to get hammered before I send the pics, I'll send you some that definitely require alcohol!!! ;)

Thanks,

Jerry

I dont know what maker youre dealling with Monster but I hope all goes well. IMHO your post is not out of line in the least.

Its ok I actually really like to have pics of a knives before theyre done. I completely understand it will not look so great. So you can send me a pic of the unfinished knife with no worries. Thanks Again and All the Best!

Its been about "two weeks". If a maker won't send a picture, its usually pretty safe to assume that the knife has not been started yet.

L. Uebelein,
I know what you are going through, believe me!!! However, in your case, you are dealing with a much better maker than I. I have dealt with Jerry on a several deals, including two Arctic Team Variants, and though I did have to wait a bit longer than I expected or was told, when the knives arrived, all that went away as I sat and litteraly drooled in amazement at the knives I had in my hands. There is no feeling in the world like opening a box addressed to you that has TWO Busse Variants inside!!!!

That said, and you probably being as impatient as myself and most of us here(kid in a candy store, or something like that!), and rightfully so, Jerry will make good, and it will be worth it. Jerry is a class act, and though he may be a bit behind schedule from time to time, what you will get will fulfill your expectations. Try to hang in there, I know it's hard to do when you want something so bad(blades, bikes and booze!!!) and you have to wait. I just got done fighting a knife maker for 15 months to get what I paid for 100% in advance, and it is almost over. Just try to hang in there, having patience is great, but NEEDING patience SUCKS, but that's life. You'll be stoked in the end.:D

No one in this thread has disputed that Jerry makes a great knife, but lying about the wait time in order to get the customer to lay down a huge deposit is totally unacceptable. If Jerry doesn't have the time or ability to answer emails and take pictures that he has promised, he should hire someone capable of doing it. If he wants to continue his practice of making custom orders whenever he feels like it with no regard to the stated wait time, he should stop taking deposits. It isn't right to tie up people's money like that.
