I have been a knife nut all my life and don't understand the Busse craze. Most I've spent on one is $150. What is it about Busse that commands the high price?
TY

I don't own one but generally there are 3 things that come to mind in my own value/purchase calculus regarding Bussekin
1) Exclusivity-of materials, if you want INFI/SR101 they are they makers.
2) Camaraderie-buying a Busse mean you own a Busse and thats cool (to someone), same is true with high end brand names of anything(CRK/Strider/Hinderer/Coach Leather/Designer shoes/etc)
3) Warranty-they stand behind their product's use through bloody well near everything, only a few other maker offer such

Personally I don't have a use for most of their designs, tho I would love to own a high street one day.

Personally I don't like safe queens, so I'm not sure what the craze is about either.

This was a joke, please don't murder me.

Mike Stewart said it better than I can . . . "Jerry Busse makes some of the toughest knives on the planet."

Some people get a slight chub when the number of words in the name of their knife could rival the page count of a Tolstoy novel and includes terms like "Battle Mistress".

Also just joking, don't stab me with your Tier One Super Swayback Black Ops Tank Gray Traction Coat Rat Swamp Buggy INFI Junkyard Battle Mistress, fellas!

A lot of this is true but I would also add that some of their designs are just darn functional. I don't own one but the Ratmandu gets some of the best actual use reviews of any knife in its size. And for that price it is a fantastic deal.

Just go over to the Busse subforum and look at the picture threads. They make lots of different designs that are available only at one time or another.

And as for price, IMO they are more fairly priced than many customs in similar size and materials, and you can't get a custom in INFI!

My recently purchased TGLB:

I'm not a collector, I use the knives I buy. At this point I have one Busse I own, and gave other ones as gifts. Toughest knife I've had by far, I literally beat mine to hell and back and it just laughed when my hand trembled when I was too tired to go any more. I've taken it backpacking, canoeing, mountain climbing, trout fishing, and anywhere else I go outdoors, and it hasn't let me down. I am out a lot, I use it a lot, so to me the extra $200 over another knife I spent on it was worth it, it's just a quality product. I just need to find a new sheath for mine now.

I think Busse makes some of the most versatile and good looking knives... 1/4" thick steel that can hold a mean edge and handle chopping and prying without fear of chipping or bending and isn't called an axe or pry bar. You might find better individual choppers, skinners, pryers, slicers, etc- but Busse has all the bases covered exceptionally well.

Busse = Working knives....you can spend less for lesser quality named knives but when you decide to step up your game try getting your investment back....With Busse you put it on the exchange and
someone will snatch it up while you patiently wait 2 weeks:eek: for the New Bigger Busse you have on order....They love to be Punished...:D

I think a certain guy over on the BK&T sub stole some shrimp when he bumbled through the Busse fans' little party, though. :D

Infi is a pretty awesome steel for starters. They are absolutely rugged and hold an edge great. As someone mentioned above Jerry will take care of you even If you break the knife doing something no knife has any business doing. On top of that there is the camaraderie that comes with being a part of a somewhat exclusive group like Busse owners, you won't get that with a big box company. It is also cool to me that they only make a knife for a limited time and then it's done.
Check out the following thread

I have only been into Busses since about November but they have been nothing but good to me, so much so that I sold all the knives I owned after I bought my first as far as fixed blades go anyway...my group, far left is the pride and joy of my collection and my favorite to use

I owned one due to all the hype about their "steel".

it was NOT a very good cutter and it NEEDED a regrind that I was not about to bother with.

Sold it to another who also wanted to see why all the hype.

$150.00 is nothing in the knife world for a blade; it takes more scratch than that to see what's out there and experience the pro's and con's of what goes into a high dollar production or custom knife versus something like an Opinel or Mora (not that there's anything wrong with those).

Variety at different price points is what makes the knife hobby great and Busse (Swamprat & Scrapyard included) knives perform well for the money IMHO.:cool:

Some of mine; the TGLB in center is :thumbup::thumbup::D

Don't knock it till you've tried it. :)

It's funny when I'll informed people say Busse knives don't get used. Spend some time in the Busse forum and see for yourself.

Also funny when people say Busse knives are status symbols. Most people that buy Busse knives do so after having lots of experience with other blades. It's pretty rare to find someone that isn't well educated on knives, buying a Busse. It's usually the noob that talks bad about Busse knives, be it pricing or quality. Those of us that like to abuse our knives, love how easy it is to bring an edge back to injured INFI.

Just to clarify an earlier bit of misinformation posted. SAR-101 is not an exclusive steel. It's 52100 steel which anyone can get. Swamp Rat just does their special heat treat on it and makes it better than anyone else (IMO).

Busse warranty is one of the best in the business. Not that it gets used much. Check out the destruction tests on YouTube.

Jerry Busse and crew are awesome. They have a nice presence here on BF and are always happy to answer questions. Not too many owners take the time to actually interact with the consumer directly. Same reason I'm a fan of Spyderco. Sal Glesser and Jerry Busse are awesome people.

Yes I'm a Busse fanboy but that's for good reason. No I don't love every knife they make. There are quite a few I have zero interest in.

Superior knives with superior designs made from superior materials with a superior warranty.

You have to make your own sheath, or pay to have someone else make it for you. Edges might need reprofiling to suit your cutting needs, but only if you're actually going to use it. That said, they still sell knives as fast as they can make them.

Actually.......you still have to wait 2 weeks:eek: Or maybe as long as a year for one from the custom shop...they have Ganzaaaas where you either hit or miss on scoring and still have to wait for production of the one you may have scored....Then there is the Begging for a particular model to be released HELLO Jerry....B8 Puh Puh Puh Leeeeez!!!!!

IMO an exclusive heat treat makes it an exclusive steel, tho I suppose I could have been clearer about the specifics in my original post, as you said 52100 in a Busskin isn't the same as the 52100 in any other makers blade right?
