Busse craze?

Mike Stewart said it better than I can . . . "Jerry Busse makes some of the toughest knives on the planet."

"...and I taught them how to do it."

Hey-ooooooh! Obnoxious Mike Stewart joke. Had to do it.

But back to the point...while I am not a Busse fan, I would hardly call them a "craze." "Zombie green" was a craze, Nessmuks were a craze for a while. ....Busse has been around a while and will be around a while. Not a fad.

Lots of makers have or use exclusive heat treats. Does anyone else rename the steel? I think it's a little goofy that they rename 52100 because of a heat treatment. They use Elmax but don't rename it. They have used 154cm and didn't rename it. Why rename 52100? It's not a big deal but it's worth mentioning.

That's because it's not technically 52100 from what I've gathered, I believe it is essentially 52100 with a small change in the formula adding something or other.

IMO an exclusive heat treat makes it an exclusive steel, tho I suppose I could have been clearer about the specifics in my original post, as you said 52100 in a Busskin isn't the same as the 52100 in any other makers blade right?

The 52100 used by Swamp Rat and Scrapyard is the exact same 52100 as you will find from any other maker just has there "special" heat treat. Which isn't a bad thing you really don't need to change anything in 52100 to make it an amazing knife steel, as it sits its one of the best all around tool steels out there imo.

I’ll never understand the Busse thing. I’ve owned a few and it’s never caught on with me. Their high cost and the fact you have to source a sheath can be a hassle, the waiting sucks too. One thing that got me was another custom knife maker drilled a hole in the same area where Busse drills their holes then lawyers get involved.

I have a (comparatively) small handful of Busse knives - some get a lot of use, some will probably not get much actual use unless there's a zombie apocalypse, but I won't buy a knife that I'm not willing to use (so yes, I've used expensive custom folders to cut pizza), and I appreciate just how much Busse knives are built to be used, and abused. Their warranty is second to none, their knives are nigh on unbreakable, their handles are comfortable for extended use, (some of) their designs are awesome (opinions will vary), and their usual reaction to someone modding one of their knives is "oh, cool - how's that working out?".

If I had to thin out my collection, I'd likely keep the handful of Busses and Hinderers and sell off everything else, both high and low. Because the ones I'd be left with would handle every task, would be extraordinarily functional and reliable, and would be as works of art to those who can appreciate the beauty of tools. I'd get great enjoyment from using them, every time I picked one up, and I'd feel confident that I can depend on them to work every time.

(Hmm, I hope I'm not talking myself into getting rid of the rest of my collection.)

Yeah, what is it with this "Busse craze"? It has to just be a passing fad. A flash in the pan I say!

Just kidding Jerry! You know I love ya man!

I just thought of the answer! They're excellent for batoning through cabbage!

They appear to be good designs, well made, and very tough. If you want a knife that is proven tough and cost is no object, they might be the one to go to. The price is high, beyond my price range, and they seem to have restrictive business practices.

I am getting my TGLB in 10 days! Count em 10 business days!.......... Yeah.......... Did I say ten days? Yeah!!!!!!!! Okay I'll be quiet now.......... 10 days!

congrats on the TGLB... such a great blade! Here's mine with friends:
