Busse Folder Warranty? . . . . Hmmmm . . . Good Question!

From what I have been told throughout the years by those in the "know", cross-threaded micro screws are the number one reason for folder returns and there really is no easy fix in most cases.

Best approach is probably to make sure to use high quality but easily sourced screws and spacers, pivots etc, easily replaced and that screws go into separate sleeves & not threaded into the handle scale material itself.

It's like a fixed blade, only broke in the middle!

.
So, boss is selling pre-broken blades? Seems like it’s fully immune from… breaking, if it’s already broken??

This was brought up in the Busse Folder thread and I have to admit, that this question has caused me to drink more heavily than usual!

I really haven't checked out a lot of the folding knife warranties that are on the market, so perhaps that could lead us to the answer.

Which folding knife manufacturer has the strongest, no bullshizzy warranty at this time?

I have to admit that it would be difficult to unconditionally warrant something for life that has parts that will wear, mechanical movement, and that will surely be disassembled and reassembled for cleaning and curiosity.

From what I have been told throughout the years by those in the "know", cross-threaded micro screws are the number one reason for folder returns and there really is no easy fix in most cases.

So, the question is, How do we offer the best warranty in the business?

How would you write it?

We have several versions written so far but we still have time to change!

I can see now that this is going to require a full bottle of scotch!😲

Let's Drink!

If screws are the issue, then don’t use any!
If the Chinese and Japanese can build temples and buildings without a single nail or screw, I’m sure someone can make a knife without easily stripped screws, or any screws at all!!
(Check out the Rike Unicorn that can be disassembled without using any tools!)

Maybe a small fee for blade replacement, 30$...I think that's what Benchmade was charging. No Idea about the broken screw problem...I did that to one of my Buck pocket knives....I'll never do that again >.<. Pay to ship it in, shipping backs free.

If you send some Blue Label with the remains of a broken folder, then it’s covered under warranty.

Curtiss - basically warranted with discretion, use your knife like a knife.

Love the comment that it should be built without stuff that will fail in the first place,…screws/whatever….

The screws could be replaced with rivets or make the handles lock into place with a twist or make them pivot. Or make the bigger and harder to screw up. The blade and handles themselves could be covered by your amazing and generous warranty. The small parts that go into it could be under your discretion and/or you could charge a small fee to replace them. Or sell them separately so we can fix them ourselves.

Greg Medford always said to stop taking your knife apart. If you have a problem send it in. If you take it apart they can tell.

This one’s a brain buster for sure..

One one hand, I wanna say go the full 9 yards and warranty it like the normal Busse kin knives. Given if it’s a one time run or very limited. Most people won’t have the folder anyway and the ones who do, well, most of them won’t need it either but the warranty is there as a testament to the Busse reputation.

On the other hand.. if this knife is prone to parts wearing quickly ie: liner lock, button lock, or fidget type locks that people play with all day(I’m guilty of this) parts will wear faster and a warranty there doesn’t make sense. Especially if it becomes a reoccurring run that goes to the masses of end users.

If it’s a solid lock like a triad or similar back lock, or other strong solid lock. I could see the warranty being feasible.

It’s still a Busse so If the blade is over 3.5 inches, people will chop with it, or at least try to. Make sure there’s a strong pivot and strong stop pin! Steel liners as well. If you don’t think chopping should be covered let it be known in the details of the warranty and I will gladly use it as a whittler or general edc instead of hard use. Busse knives can take an unholy amount of abuse but given that this is Busses first folder I wouldn’t be disappointed in the slightest if it’s not bombproof. As long as it’s FOLDING INFI, I’m IN FOR IT.

my opinion only

Ask customer to send blade in on their expense

Shop ships back on shop expense

If knife is fixable, shop fixes knife no charge. Doesn’t really matter what happened

If knife is not fixable, but due to real issue or defect, replace knife or award shop credit, and pack of skittles

If knife not fixable, but due to customer misuse, offer customer replacement at retail or option to receive broken knife back, with disclaimer that it is not functional and customer understands this

If knife not fixable, but due to customer misuse but has a good story to go along with it that is heroic, or knife is broken as part of public service, story goes on story wall and customer gets new knife or shop credit

Torx 10 for handle screws and pocket clip screw
Torx 20 for pivot screw
not a frame or liner lock
i think he already has a patented design.

The biggest problem with folders is the single point of failure. There are ways to improve but it will never be perfect. Do enough prying and it will fail. Do enough chopping and it will fail and it won't be the edge that fails first. Not knowing exactly how this folder works, it is impossible to know how well it will take abuse.

Surprised you haven’t received your test knife for review yet.

Tough crowd though. Bet your ass, the first week they go out, someone will make a video firing a 50cal at it to prove it can be broken and test the warranty.

When you make the Titanic of folders Jerry, my battle mistress will be an iceberg! Forever!
