Busse Folder Warranty? . . . . Hmmmm . . . Good Question!

Some numb-nuts will intentionally destroy them just to make a video or ‘just because’. It is a folder, and despite being a Busse will still not being a fixed blade. Whatever you decide to release and with whatever warranty you decide on will be gladly received imho.

I have been buying custom and production folders since the early 1990's. I have never returned a folder for a warranty issue. I have owned hundreds and used hundreds of knives. I think most returns are operator error or using the tool for the wrong purpose. Unless there is a manufacturing defect, no returns. If you screw up your knife by taking it apart you should have to pay for repairs.

Personally, I find the lengths manufacturers have gone to coddle the customer is ludicrous. If the knife is broken when you buy it, yes it needs to be fixed. If you used it for years and it failed, no warranty. I have some folders I used so much they just wore out. Over sharpening, lock travel issues and loose pivots. I retired them. I was thankful for the service they provided me. No tool lasts forever when it is used.

This line of thinking applies more to folders than fixed blades.

Oh, here we go, mr. Logic to poop on our party. Sheesh. I just want warranty in case of loss or theft:)

I think the warranty as it stands is pretty iron clad

"All Busse Knife Group blades are guaranteed for life against any and all unintentional MAJOR damage. Your knife will either be repaired or replaced at our discretion."

Busse has been replacing knives for as long as I have been involved (over 25 years) even if it was intentional.

We have gotten used to that. if you intentionally break your folder guess what, they will still probably take care of you.

best advertising in anything, ever.

"hey what folder should I get ?"

"well those Busse's are guaranteed forever!!!"

who would not buy one ?

Lot of good welding and scale ideas and filling holes, makiing others - I've Got It! Jerry! Make a Full Tang Folder! or how about, weld in the folding shit! That would be badass! :D

This was brought up in the Busse Folder thread and I have to admit, that this question has caused me to drink more heavily than usual!

I really haven't checked out a lot of the folding knife warranties that are on the market, so perhaps that could lead us to the answer.

Which folding knife manufacturer has the strongest, no bullshizzy warranty at this time?

I have to admit that it would be difficult to unconditionally warrant something for life that has parts that will wear, mechanical movement, and that will surely be disassembled and reassembled for cleaning and curiosity.

From what I have been told throughout the years by those in the "know", cross-threaded micro screws are the number one reason for folder returns and there really is no easy fix in most cases.

So, the question is, How do we offer the best warranty in the business?

How would you write it?

We have several versions written so far but we still have time to change!

I can see now that this is going to require a full bottle of scotch!😲

Let's Drink!

I think the kings of folding knives (by popularity) are Victorinox and Spyderco. The former is too far of a concept from the upcoming Busse folder, so I would talk only about the latter.

Why not guarantee the blade against any and all unintentional major damage for life, then inspire from the Spyderco warranty (https://www.spyderco.com/service-support/warranty-repair/) for the rest of the knife parts? These two things combined would still beat any other folding knife warranty available in the world, while also being aligned with your warranty for fixed blades.

PS: For a folding knife, I think beside warranty, you need to also consider the service policy, regardless if that will be a paid or covered by warranty. You may need to maintain a stock of compatible parts forever and if those folders will fail more often than fixed blades, then you will have this starving part of your workforce that instead of building new knives, may spend their time repairing old ones. The main concern is not the warranty, but the eventual impossibility to fix a great product (even for a cost), if the blade is still in good shape but the manufacturer pulled it out of maintenance. Is like when purchasing a car: you always want to know for how many years onward does the manufacturer commit to assure service and replaceable components. So I see a good warranty also mentioning for how long will the manufacturer offer replaceables (even paid) and what is the ETA for a service intervention (the total lead time from the moment I, as a customer, express my need to the company for a service intervention, until I receive my product back fixed).

I hope this helps. I am keen to find out at the end what warranty statement you will decide upon. 🤔

Adding to my previous post: If the warranty will cover the blade against any and all unintentional major damage for life, and the other parts will be replaceable or fixed under cost, then you just need to make the blade slightly sturdier than the rest, so that it will not be the blade the part which fails first. This ecuation should not encourage the abuse and would allow you to design a blade that is not necessarily as thick as to be low cutting performer. 🤔
