BADGER ATTACK

Don't listen to Raymond, he is obviously putting up a smoke screen so that HE can hog all the BAIII's

How did you guess? I use them as nails when I throw up a shelter in the woods.

Kbuzbee is right. The Ratmandu is also a good choice. And available.

You guys are awesome. Thanks for all the input. It does seem like the BAIII is the way to go for me. Any tips on how to find one? I was going to post on the "Wanted to Buy: Knives" section of the forums, but it seems like no one ever posts there. Good choice of blade. It is best to post in the WTB section to try to find one. Some hog will most likely turn up to help out man....Mike

I don't mind spending some time looking for the knife I really want (I have a bit of an obsessive personality anyway), but in the meantime I do need a knife by early September in time for my next trip. Taking into account all the other suggestions (Meaner Street, BA TAC, and Satin Jack), I would love to actually see the knives and compare them in person. This might be a long shot, but does anyone know someone or a dealer in Southern California that has a Busse collection that they'd be willing to show me?

Thanks again. You guys are quite a friendly bunch.

Blessings,
Brian

There are tons of posts in the WTB section...I think you can't see them unless you're a paying member, but you should be able to see your own posts.

Welcome Brian!

The Busse knife family includes 3 companies: Scrapyard Knives, Swamp Rat Knives, and Busse Combat. Each has a separate line of knives with some differing characteristics in design, handle material, and blade metal. All have superior warranties. All have outstanding customer service. A knife from any of the companies is an excellent choice. As you'll find, each Busse company makes their knives in batches so availability depends a lot of when you look. Look often :)

While I also think either the Meaner or BATAC would make a fine small camp knife, others you might consider include the Scrapyard Street Scrapper 4 (SS4), the Scrapyard Yard Keeper LE, the previously mentioned Swamp Rat Ratmandu, the Swamp Rat HRLM (several generations).

Outside of the Ratmandu, all the others will need to be purchased on the secondary market.

I hope this gives you a few more choices to consider beyond the elusive BAIII. Good luck.

I'd rather use my Badger III for bushcraft than my Meaner. So what? What good is it to advise Brian to use a knife that is, for all practical purposes, unavalable?

If you are looking for a Busse for Bushcraft then I think the BA-III is the knife.

And the good it does to suggest that he finds one is that he doesn't spend time with knives that may not suit his use. Also they do come up for sale now and then. In fact I'd bet he gets a BA-III off the exchange before the Co Store has a BATAC.

here are two Badgers with an AD and HD

No Busse is, for all practical purposes, unavailable. In my short time here, I've even been offered a Busse that cannot be shown publicly (sale contingent upon approval from Jerry). A little time and effort usually pays dividends. I haven't found a SFNO to my liking yet, but I have no doubt one will turn up eventually.

The BA-III is the bushcraft blade in my book, and so I wanted to pass that information along.

WTB can reap rewards. Post and then continue to update regularly (within forum limits). You never know who'll see it.

Another option is a raid on the holdings of either Skunk or RedWolfHowlin. Let me know if you decide to go that route so that an assault team can be recruited and assembled. You're going to need diversionary explosions, a team of expert burglers, and perhaps even small armored vehicles to get past security. You may also have to bribe several people on the inside.

Here's another pic... Top to bottom, Street Scrapper 4 from Scrapyard, Anorexic Badger Attack LE, Meaner Street, Active Duty, Game Warden.

Two Swamp Rats...

Here's a pic of a Ratmandu with a 4 3/4" blade (tip to edge of scales is 5 1/8") over a Howling Rat Little Mischief.

My advice is to grab a Ratmandu for your trip if you can catch them at shop.ratknives.com

And then continue to look for a BA-III safe in the knowledge that you've got a knife for your trip.

sure.... and as he's thanking me he's tunneling under my vault.
i'm on to you mulder!!!

Tunneling would be toooo much like work.
My plan is to show up at the door with a few sticks of dynamite and some booze and say lets go fishing.

Welcome to the Busse Forum, Simpkin. Hope you have a great time on your upcoming trips.

I would agree with others that the badger is a good all around choice for what you describe. Skunk makes a good point on the old style SJ as an option ..... it is 3/16" thick and about 6 inches in length from handle to tip. Keep looking at the various Busse knives and best wishes on finding that perfect knife.

If those did show in the store I would be all over it... may have to get a loan, but whatever it takes.
Now I'm just dreaming:(

simpkin, welcome to our crazy little world. I looked into those two knives you lost. Those were quite valuable, that sucks.

The good news, a Busse won't cost as much as those were worth. The bad news is, as you've learned, it will be hard to get one. That was a good idea to get a RatManDu now, and keep trying for a Badger Attack III, eventually.

I'm going to suggest something a little different, maybe a little heretical here. That bushcraft style knife looks very simple, just a bit of a V-grind on some O1 steel. There are some very good knife makers, members here on BF, who could easily make a copy of that style for you, maybe even by September. And it won't cost all that much. Spend some time over in the Knifemakers forums, look in their gallery area, cruise their "For Sale" section and you will find makers who work in O1. Good luck in your quest!

Thanks again guys for all your suggestions and help. The search for a Badger Attack 3 (or maybe Anorexic Badger) continues. Depending on how that search goes I might even have to get a Fehrman Peace Maker (gasp).

And resinguy: I'm definitely considering going that route too. Stewart Marsh actually has some knives available right now, but with the exchange rates they're over $700! Maybe I can find someone even better (and cheaper) here on Bladeforums.

Any suggestions for a good knife maker anyone?
