Busse price justification

Because the pricing is what the market will bear?;)

We are not talking about quality issues here as I have stated my knife is a custom hand made one of a kind.

What steel is your 1 off made of? Now how many other people or companies use that same steel, how many could if they wanted? and how many make knives that are similar to yours in size and shape? Be honest.

Now how many other companies or people use INFI?

I have heard this knife is a BEAST, TANK, INDESTRUCTIBLE, in so so many subforums but when you get down to it, how many of those other companies will let you treat their knives like an indestructible tank, and even replace it if you break it treating it that way?

Most companies have warranties that protect you when using the knife as designed... Well busse designs their knives as tanks... and you can use it as such.

If you take that custom of yours and attempt to cut a car door off because your bored, the maker will probably laugh at you when you break it.

If you take a Busse out of boredom and try and cut the door off a car... THE DOOR COMES OFF. But if you chip the blade they will happily repair or replace it. They make sure you are comfortable enough to use the knife without worry.

So spending 500+ on a knife that will outlast you GUARANTEED is worth it, it can be the last knife you ever purchase.... if you can control your addiction/habit LMAO

I have 1 Busse and its a USER, I have no worry or fear about using it. And it was easily worth every penny I paid.

Here is an excerpt from the Busse site, this just screams USE YOUR KNIFE.

"Busse Knife Group encourages extreme usage of our blades as they are without question "The Toughest Knives in the World". We have no rivals. You can use a Busse Knife Group blade as hard as you like and our warranty has you covered."

And every thread needs PICS!!! Let us see the custom please :).... Ill go first if your shy

Thanks for the info guys. I guess that on further introspection I am comparing apples and oranges. These while are beautiful in their own right and can surely become a show piece if one wished, they are first and foremost "users". My knife is entirely a show piece and a work of art and most definitely not a user by any rights. I wouldn't even think of using this knife to even open a box with it. Therefore I believe that all of your points are valid and I think that I understand why they command the price they do. I was trying to compare raw materials (ie) the mastodon molar and moku ti Damascus against something that is entirely different. Thank you for your input and I will most definitely consider making a Busse one of my next purchases

Sorry im slow typer lmao I wrote the other post before I seen this.

But can we see the custom ???? Sounds beautiful.

even Jason Brous blades cost more than $300, and he's relatively new to the custom market what maker has a one of a kind for $300?
Why are some custom hand made one of a kind knives $500 and others $3000?

Has to do with maker, reputation, difficulty in making it, cost of materials, quality of materials, and the "just because" factor.

Who made your custom damascus knife?

A lot bro! You can go to the knifemakers section and find a maker with a style you like and then ask them for a 1 off at 300, a lot of them are great guys and will help you get exactly what you want.

Busse can make you a 1 off too... But im not sure what the price tag will look like.

Busses are great if you want something to cut a car in half. If you want something that cuts well and is still durable there are better choices, honestly guys this is just plain true. When it comes to doing stupid stuff with a knife that no one in there right mind would ever have to do Busses are at the top of the hill.

I am not liking this comment...

Take your custom, and use it to baton through hardwood posts with nails in it... when it breaks in half, send it back to the maker with a video of what you did to break it, and ask for a replacement. When he stops laughing and tells you no, you'll understand what set's Busse apart

Why does it matter how new to the custom market are u ? I'm not even in the custom maker but I had opportunity to make custom knife with Gil Hibben and let me tell u . At last $200+ in material + equipment , AC etc and 5 days of hard work do u think that was easy? Hell no. I wouldn't sell the knife for less than $1500 now for $300 I wouldn't even turn the light on in the shop.

Busse's are cheap!!!, now you are probably thinking i must have lost my marbles to say such a thing but i used to make a living making things from steel so will try to explain. Infi is a nitrogen infused steel and this type of steel does not come cheap, the closest thing to infi you can get your hands on is probably Vanax. So let's pretend we are going to make a ASHBM in Vanax, when buying steel you pay by the pound and a rough estimate on the cost of the blank needed brings the starting cost to 100$ then add the cost of cutting the shape 15$ and the CNC at a estimated self cost of 75$ per blade, next thing we can add is the 72 hour heat treat and deep cryo treatment and i cant see how this can be done cheaper than 100$ per blade, large scale industrial vacum heat treat with cryo costs about half but Busse is by no means a large scale company and they do a in house heat treat with attentinon to detail.

I don't know much about micarta but i can't see how buying the raw material micarta slab and machining it and then fixing it to the knife with tubes can cost less than 100$ , i think hand finishing and sharpening also adds up to at least 50$ per blade in self cost, now let's pay for some booze and marketing and the workers that works behind a desk with 150$.

I am also thinking that Infi would add a cost of 60$ over Vanax per blade.

Add it all together and you get 650$ (busse charges 697$). I do think Busse has better margins than this but it is a somewhat educated guess.

Busse has some expensive models yes, most however are priced fair considering the materials, qc, warranty you get. Not to mention the resale value has been known to increase in many models.

Another note, custom makers build a name for themselves and with time the price of their knives increases, considering they are "good". Busse has been considered "good" for a while and their prices have been relatively stable for some time.
