Busse Spoonin'

Great work CamoNut!!!

Thanks Paul!:)

So much good info here!! :D

I need to look up the episode number, but there is an episode of The Woodwrights Shop that focused on spoon making. The big fellow used some really nice tools and some really old techniques. Made some really nice wares as well. That was my introduction to the uses of the hook knife, and the use of a hatchet to rough out the thing. Quite the nice hatchet as well.

EDIT To Add!!! Found the episode I saw back then!!! http://video.pbs.org/video/2172740518/

I have seen that before(good video to watch), thanks for the link  There is a lot of good info in the video! Worth a watching twice!

Wow, great work CamoNut. Very informative video too, thanks for that,,,:thumbup:

Thanks Trukreltrog!:) I like your spoon too, and think you did a good job without using a spoon knife on the bowl!! The 1st two spoons I made I did without a spoon knife, and it's a lot harder to do. Do yourself a favor(if you plan to make more spoons) and buy a spoon knife, you will be glad you did!

Thanks for the welcoming and the opportunity to share some carvings with you all!!

I just carved this from an Apple Tree branch last Thur. so it's still green/drying and needs a little cleaning up and then oiling, but here it is... hope you like it!?

Thanks for sharing that Dwayne, I've found a few more episodes I'm going to watch, that is one of my favorite shows I hardly get to see.

They just started back a couple of weeks ago in these parts. I do hear that schedules differ from station to station. I try to catch them every time they're on, here its twice a week. Its been over a year since they've been on here so I'm overjoyed that they are back. :D

I do very much love the old ways of wood and leather crafting. Machines take so much away from the soul of the piece.

I busted this one out of an oak log with my skinny ASH and roughed it out. I've gotten this far with the barlow. Not fancy but a spoon none the less. It has been fun and relaxing to work on it, too.

Started watching the video and I realized that he´s talking about Jögge and his father..
They´re actually living not that far from my hometown.. sometimes the world seems to be a rather a small place.

Very cool mhawg! I find it relaxing too, thanks for sharing!

I still have a lot to learn about both, but I can agree, that working with hand tools really let you get to know a piece. I love having something I made, that's functional and has a beauty to it, even if I'm the only one that can see it. :D

Here's a giant spoon after being roughed out with the NMFBM, and a big butter knife, both carved from wild cherry.

That is some BEAUTIFUL wood! Very nice shapes on those two pieces as well.

Anyone else carved any spoons lately? The Battle Grade Team Gemini was perfect for this sassafras serving spoon.

If you carve the spoon while the wood is very green, don't you risk the piece cracking as it dries?

DaKruiser, the spoons are cool.

But...............I know your leather work is pretty good too.

Also, I vaguely remember successfully conning you into making me a holster for my Serbu!

I've had more crack from being carved with wood that is dryer, like Space Coyote posted, just keep it oiled, and don't let it soak in water you'll be fine.

Thank you my friend, good to see you here! I need to work on those Serbu holsters, and you are at the top of the list when I do.

Just need to keep it lightly oiled with some mineral oil (as any other wooden spoon)

I use coconut oil myself, it's amazing how much oil a green piece of wood can soak up.
