i think the main problem with tube fasteners like that would be if one side was ground excessively thin, making the chance of crumpling more likely. if there was a crack in it, that would also be bad. i've had several tube fasteners that had visible gaps at the edges of the flared portions, but the flaring did connect farther in, and did hold the handle steady.
certainly its better to have them machined as evenly as possible, but even if they were done unevenly i bet they'd hold up just fine. since its an option to have them fixed, and if your willing to wait, i'd say send them back and make sure your satisfied.
