Busse's New Bushwacker

Interesting point about Rolex...

When my uncle died, my siblings and I were left a couple of thousand dollars each. I wanted to get something that I would never otherwise purchase, and that would remind me of him... I decided to buy a Rolex Explorer ($1200 back then). That was about 30 years ago, and I have worn it every day in all situations... swimming in the ocean, hiking, canoeing, working in a garage as a student, etc.

Granted, it does not keep time as accurately as many cheaper digitals, but I would guess that most people don't own a cheap Timex for 30 years of daily hard use. Of course, it can be argued that I could have bought a ton of Timexes over the years for the price of a Rolex, but none of them would have meant as much to me, or to my own kids who will have this watch when I'm dead and buried.

I am puzzled why people feel the need to attempt to humiliate people who spend money on things they don't agree with. I'm sure even these folks have interests which inspire them and on which they spend more time and money than simple pragmatism would justify. I sincerely hope they do, as those are some of life's pleasures which we should enjoy if we are fortunate enough to have the opportunity.

Edit... I just realized that the knife in my avatar opens me up to criticism in the same way that a Busse does... in the British forums particularly there is a tendency to take great pleasure in ridiculing people who own Woodlore blades, as "Mears wannabees" who don't have the sense to know that a cheap Mora will do the same job. Nonetheless, I enjoy using it, I can afford it and have worked very hard to be able to do so, and I will take great pleasure in passing it on to my kids and their kids.

Edit #2: I'm tickled with my new Bushwacker :)

Well put, sir! I personally prefer sticking with the more budget-friendly blades, but I'm a college student! If I had the kind of money to drop on a Busse or Woodlore I certainly would! But in the mean-time I'll make do with machetes and moras, which I'll never cease to enjoy. :)

I'll admit, nobody needs a Busse to survive. They don't need some of nice custom bushcraft blades I see on this forum, either. A Swiss Army knife, a Mora, and a Tramontina will get the job done. But this forum is one of the Blade Forums. There are knife lovers on all these forums. People dedicated to the art and science of the blade. Collectors and Outdoorsmen. Makers and users. If somebody tells me that it is stupid or silly to pay over $350 for a glorified machete, I am not offended. I understand that point of view. In fact, I think from a purely funtional and economic perspective, buying Busses is an extravagant thing to do. But don't be surprised to see some exotic and expensive knives on any of the Blade Forums. There are knife nuts here. I am one of them.

Well said buddy, and man, you did a really good job on that BUSSE. I want one. I kinda miss my FBM's...and I REALLY miss my SARSQUATCH, this looks like it would fill both voids perfectly!

Horn Dog,

Great review as always:thumbup: I'd like to handle one of those for sure.. I have an FBM which I think is a great blade, but I haven't carried it a lot, maybe it is the weight or the fact I like my Koyote Bush Beater ever better. But it's a great blade nonetheless..

Off Topic - Looking through this thread, I would like to see the Jerkit icon eliminated from use here in WS&S, I find it disrespectful....

The Busse costs?

The Ontario costs?

Sounds like the Ontario would be by far, the best value.

Agreed 100%.

To me, this would depend on the definition of "value".

I fully agree that it would be hard to justify a Busse over the Ontario if value in this context is measured by the ability to cut and chop. There may be some extreme aspects of utilization that the Busse would excel in, but not likely common enough to justify the added expense.

However, suppose someone has wanted a Busse for years, has saved up for one, this is their dream knife, and they enjoy being part of the Busse community (just as the Fallkniven community, the RAT community, etc) ... it's hard to argue against this having value for them.

I understand and completely respect your opinion... just want to point out that values are subjective and sometimes difficult to justify or explain.

I think the definition of a hobby should include the fact that you have a hard time justifying the time or money you're putting into something that makes you happy :)

Cheers, and Happy New Year :)

I thought I made that clear in the review. Yes, if you want a bushwaker style knife for 1/3 the price of the Busse, get the Ontario. But don't expect INFI toughness in 1095 steel. The Ontario is a good knife.
