Butter Knives

Then buy the cheap sandwich knives they're plenty 'springy'! There's always Cold Steel brand knives they make some that could spread butter, and cut toast fairly well. Plenty of models to choose from with low price points too. Have'nt seen their catalog in a while but I do recall seeing some kitchen knives in there. I would'nt specifically look for just a butter knife, as most end up doing double duty in the kitchen. You may want a sharper edge on it than the standard table fare type knife. Which is why I suggest you look in a few catalogs. Even better quality knifemakers sometimes produce kitchen knife lines that have smaller knives you may find suitable. I actually think the flattened spoon thing might work, and may give it a shot myself with an old silverplate spoon.

By flattened spoon do you guys mean hammering a spoon until the top is flat or what exactly? I agree with the idea of having it with a sharper edge, this would save on using one knife for the cutting and one for buttering, a multi task butter knife! Would it be possible then to say sharpen the flattened spoon, think I might be on to something here!?

I would think that the sharpened spoon edge would not be sufficent for a cutting edge, as most sandwiches would be too dense. This is why I suggest you look at a kitchen knife, like a smaller Santoku style, as in Cold Steel catalog. Then you have dual use, it'll spread and cut the snadwich or muffin round. For just slattering a piece of toast with butter or jam, the greater surface area of a 'flattened' spoon would act kind of like a spatula. I know older service sets had some dedicated 'butter knives' in them, but today's market is not desiring them IMO.

I have a few WW2 era forks stamped USN.I would love to find a whole set.Best flatware I have ever seen.

I have a set of Linux flatware with really comfortable butter knives. Waterford also makes very comfortable flatware. You can usually find them at nice department stores like Macy's, where you can handle the display models and find something that you like the feel of.

That makes good sense A Bostic, it's the simple things that elude me these days. All I can say is hopefully they offer those by the piece and she does'nt have to buy a set to get the knife!

That flattened sharpened spoon idea had more drawbacks than I'd imagined, a friend of my who was staying over the other day cut her lip while trying to use it as a normal spoon, not spotting that it was any different. Thanks a lot guys
