Buy expensive knives, carry cheap ones. My dilemma.

Can't beat $7.50 on clearance.

OP,

I have the same dilemma. A lot of these high price knives are made of outstanding quality, yet I can't muster up the courage to actually use them.

Use them, fondle them, don't use them... makes no difference. Just enjoy yourself.

Five years ago I thought it would be rational to use my Rat 1 for work and save my PM2 for leisure. Even though the Rat is a fine knife (and incredible value) I found myself dissatisfied, so I started carrying the PM2 for work because I liked using it better. Later I got a smurf blue PM2 and that became my work knife.

Point is, reasons have their place, but you have to listen to your heart. I had a logical plan but it just felt wrong. For another person, the exact opposite could be true. I have knives I never carry, because something else just always feels better and wins my pocket. Life is too short to live somebody else's life. Figure out what you love, use common sense, and go for it. All the choices are okay, so pick the one that puts a smile on your face.

I was trying to picture that myself (carrying 60 to 150 knives), but I'm sure he meant in his "rotation".

I should have wrote knives in the $60 to $150 range. I only have maybe a dozen or so pocket folders. I try not to keep anymore than that. I just meant that it's hard to carry all of your knives even in a rotation when you have certain favorites. Even in that dozen I have a few never get carried. I just keep them because I like them.

Lol I'd love to see the tactical pants that could hold all of those.

5.11 Covert Casual cotton pants will hold four 30 rounders, not even using the main pockets. He must wear something similar :)

I realize you meant $$$$$ but had to post this.

I have a lot but I keep about that many 6-12 out on a shelf and pickup the one or two and a flashlight I feel iike carrying. Sometimes I rotate the ones on the shelf, but the ZT 0452. 0450, and 0801, various model of GEC are always there, and sometimes a Cryo, Thermite, or Tenacious.

Admittedly, when I go to the shelf to grab something to cut up boxes at home I usually grab a Tenacious or Thermite and just sharpen it.

Only you can know whether you are buying a knife as a tool, or as art, or as a tool so well-made that it is functional, useable, art. Save up and buy 2 of the same good knife. Then you can use one and beat it all to hell, admire the other one as art on your dresser, and decide after a few months whether you prefer to use your good knives or collect them.

If I was in a hard-use environment I would make sure I had a good knife to use daily, because the details that make a $200 knife vs. a $45 knife would be something I could benefit from all the time. Using the more expensive knife would make my experience better. But I probably wouldn't use a "limited edition" piece in such an environment, unless it really was the best tool for the job, because usually most of the value of such knives lies in their beauty or rarity and not necessarily their perfect suitability for the job at hand.

Sometimes, I want to quit the software business, and find a job where I use my knives (more than I do now) all day long!!

is that strange?!;-)

Meh, do what you want. I think some people didn't read what the OP was doing with his knife every day. Cutting into dirt, cement, on concrete, scraping and prying. I would imagine most people here wouldn't beat up their nicer knives every day like that..

There is the same mentality on the watch forums. People that like to keep their stuff nice and others that just use their stuff without regard. There is no right or wrong.

Considering what the IT business is these days, that's not so strange at all ;)

I am a mixture of user and collector. I carry a ZT0600 most every day, and use it without hesitation (but don't abuse it), but I also have 0600 and 0600BLK safe queens in the collection. The rest of my ZT collection is about half users and half safe queens. Some are safe queens because I want a perfect example in my collection, some are because I just have not gotten around to putting into the rotation, and some are backups/duplicates. The bottom line is... do whatever makes you happy!
