Buy & Sell etiquette

I am all for turning a red paper clip into a Sebenza, haven't been able to do it yet thou.

Taken from a popular tv show right now

Deal...or...No Deal

Usually my deals are just to get funds to get another knife or recently
a new lens, I'm just glad that I'm over the watch virus! :)

Right now I have a series of knives up forsale for a friend that lives out west
I know he's taking a serious beating on a lot of the knives and barely making
even on others, but, he can't eat his knives and so he's down to moving his
collection. I can really relate as my collection is quite depleted as well, but
the steel virus is a persistent one! And I've recently made a few purchases
that were not the smartest timing in the world but I do like knives :D

So, as most of you have posted, things usually go like water and seek it's
lowest level, aka price, some folks with see/impulse buy something right away
and maybe pay just a tad too much, but, it's impulse and instant gratification

in one of a series of books I've read, about wizards, the wizard's third Rule is
Passion Rules Reason

And I find that to be so true in most everything we can apply it to.

One of the examples was a child falls into a raging river, the mother,
unable to swim, leaps in to save her child, her Passion ruled her reason
and they both perished...

Back to the subject at hand, one thing that use to get to me were the
PP, aka Price Police, they'd either intrude on a thread to state that this
particular knife could be purchased elsewhere for gazillions less, or the more
discrete ones would email with the same suggestions, and in the same breath
ask if you'd take that amount, I politely reply thanks but I'll pass.

I think the PP, no connection to peepee at least I don't think it does ;)
has slowed down a lot since the mods posted not to do such things, folks
will search out prices themselves or decide if it's a good deal or not.

Some things you can't buy any more, so TIMING is everything!

hmm long winded tonight, sorry about that! :)

One big factor you are overlooking or just might not be aware of is how fast some of these values change. Oh by the way I personally welcome you to our great Forum "KCkc" :)

But most everyone who knows me knows that I pretty much collect Spyderco & Benchmade knives with a few scattered here and there. But one huge factor that you must consider is how fast some of these values change on these knives.

Take The Spyderco Gunting model for instance. In the spring of 2005 I bought 3 of them all for less than $100 each. Low and behold!!! last fall (2005) the prices on the Gunting models literally exploded. I immediately doubled on 2 of them.

This is a market. And market forces in any kind of a market are truly speculative and unpredictable. I think you are hinting to us that the brother who made the profit was capitilizing in a predatory fashion. I really doubt if he/she had that sole intention. They may just simply got lucky like I have and like a few others have here in the past. Also when a popular knife becomes discontinued or even rumored to be discontinued I have seen prices go nuts under those circumstances.

But come on and be honest. If you were to cruise this Forum or Ebay and you were to come across a Benchmade knife that normally sells for $150 and you could get it for $80 you know darn good and well that you would jump on it. So would all the rest of us. I have only run into 2 people on this Forum in the last 2 years that I thought were jerks. Most of the guys/gals on this Forum are just simply traders, collectors and enthusiasts. and believe me very, very few of the members here are of the "throat cutting" variety.

So please reconsider your observation because it's really not like you think. and I hope you enjoy your tenure here :)
