Hi folks,

Just curious as to how the rest of you guys would handle a buyer providing an address other than their verified PayPal address.

To my knowledge, shipping to a different address means that the seller doesn't get any protection from PayPal, whereas the buyer retains protection. For a number of reasons, this could go very unfavorably for the seller.

What's the best course of action in this situation? I told the buyer that I would refund their payment, then they would update their address with PayPal and resend the payment. Is there a simpler way to remedy this?

Sounds like a good plan although to simplify I would let buyer know his PayPal address needs to be updated to his desired shipping destination. Say you will hold payment and not ship until updated or if he refuses refund payment . The less transactions the less room for error imo .

Paypal is making is hard to confirm addresses these days. I've had my account since they first started, but I have no option to confirm my current address. It's my primary address, my billing address, and I have my credit card linked. Yet my address still shows up as unconfirmed. I buy all the time on here with no issues.

^^^ Same thing here.
It's rare someone asks me about it. One seller asked me if it was ok to mail it to an unverified address.

I've had it happen several times lately. I am not entirely comfortable with it, but I have gone ahead with the sales and things have worked out fine. It has allowed me to sell some things that otherwise would have gone unsold. I think you have to use your own judgement. One thing I do if anything seems a little bit off is check the person's feedback. If everything is okay, and especially if the person has a large number of all positive feedbacks, I feel comfortable proceeding with the transaction.

Yep, The Pope said it - positive feedback matters most of all. I'm sure verified addresses matter when you're selling a hundred items a week, but when you're dealing with a longtimer on the forum with a lot of history and good feedback, not sure this is really a factor I'd be concerned with.

PayPal users can have multiple address on file. There is no reason users can't update their account information to add an additional address or change an existing address, it's not hard. You are correct, you are required to ship to the buyer's supplied address in order to be covered by PayPal protection. FWIW... PayPal does recommend that sellers avoid shipping packages to any address besides addresses on file, for the obvious reasons.

My address is in paypal, it's even the primary. Still can't get paypal to call it verified, that's the issue.

"Verified" means it was verified. It doesn't mean it's wrong or doesn't exist. No, I don't remember how to get an address verified. I do remember my address was verified because I had multiple successful transactions and it's the same address as my CC info address. But again, I'm not certain.

I thought the billing address for the CC associated with the account would be the verified address. Nope

The correct terminology is "Confirmed Address".

And you can have more than only one. I have three...

To do so, try this: CLICK HERE.

I've got 2 cards linked, still showing as unconfirmed. I've never really had a problem because of that, though, so I never pursued it.

As gzb has correctly stated, the correct term used is "Confirmed" vs "Unconfirmed" and not "Verified". Furthermore, once you get the PayPal's "OK to ship" green check mark, you are OK to ship irrespective of the status of the address. Where you (the seller) could potentially get into the issues that the OP is worrying about is when the buyer instructs you in his notes to ship it to him at a different address (Parent's, friend's, work, etc) than the one which appears on the PayPal statement. If a buyer asks you to do this, even if with the best of intentions and nothing nefarious going on, refrain to do so because you will NOT be covered under seller's protection.

I only ship to the buyers address included in the papal payment I receive. As a seller, if you ship to any other address, all the buyer has to do to get their money back is tell Paypal they did not receive the item they paid for. Paypal will ask you, the seller, to confirm shipment to buyer's official address, if you cannot do this for any reason, you loose the money and the goods you sold. Buyer gets their money back. From you.

If anybody pays for something and then starts sending you emails telling you to ship to another address, any address but the one in the payment, refuse. Refund the payment and tell them to get the correct address listed in their Paypal account. If they are legit, you will receive a corrected payment in a day or 2. If they are a scammer, you will never hear from them again.

This is what I was talking about. Not confirmed vs unconfirmed or verified/unverified. The situation I was referencing is when a buyer sends payment and requests shipment to a location other than the one listed on the PayPal payment.

It's annoying for me because I have an address in the USA (family) that I would like to ship to on occasion. Unfortunately PayPal refuses to let people have two addresses in different countries.

When someone is too cautious to ship overseas, they are usually too cautious to ship to an unverified address. I can't blame them, but I do miss out on a lot of knives!

Pretty sure this can be done in settings on Paypal. The linking of a card will do it but address changes may be handled differently

Is this a response to me?

If so, I tried before and was told by PayPal it wasn't possible.

Another hurdle I have is that I cannot have a credit card (to no fault of my own), but that's another story. :D

Just a general comment, not to you specifically.

I have an online business and deal with the unconfirmed address thing weekly as well as people who have moved and not changed their Paypal confirmed shipping address.
