Buying A New EDC. Which Would You Choose?!

Still, I think the Axis lock is my favorite lock overall. This is problematic for me because I want an Axis Spydie...

From your list, the 710 and the Manix appeal to me the most. The Manix is quite a brusier though and is not light to carry.

I've been looking for the same in a Spyderco. You should check out the ball bearing lock.

I would go with either the 710, BucK mayo TNT, or check out the 940.

I think the 710 is too large for EDC. I have the mini grip and it's perfect for me though I dont like the point up carry, opened on me the other day.

A very interesting point from "dalefuller" is the H&K 14210. Never noticed that knife before and it fits my criteria.

I would go for the BM 940 or the 710. Both knives are slim. The 940 has a relly good sized blade for how small it can appear. the 710 is also a great knife. The 710 has about half an inch more of blade then the 940. And they are both axis locks.

I know that I am repeating myself, but I can't say enough good things about the Benchmade 960. For me it works better than the 710.

Brian

EDIT: I mistakenly said the Benchmade 910 when I meant the 960.

I've got three questions:

1. How much blade do you want?
2. What blade shape is preferred?
3. What style of opener do you prefer, hole, thumb stud, etc.?

These will reduce your options more.

My other EDC is a Benchmade 3200 and gets another great recommendation from me. It is an auto so may not be appropriate in your area though.

1. I prefer anywhere between 3" to 3.75" for my edc's.

2. I really like simply shaped knives much like the Leek/Grip/Cyclone. Recurves like on the Commander/Specbump look cool, but are harder to sharpen and don't necessarily add anything positive to the function of the knife.

3. I prefer thumbholes over thumbstuds and i love assisted openers.

Thanks for all the suggestions/opinions so far guys! Keep em coming! :D

I'm warming up to Spyderco more as the posts go on...

Well, out of that list, I would say go for the Mini Cyclone in ZDP & Titanium. It is a GREAT knife!!

Alright, i've decided that instead of going to sleep when i get home from work this morning, i'm gonna stay up and head to the mall to handle some Spyderco's and other knives on my list. lol

So, pick from the list and explain your choice

BM 710: fills the hand a little more, as you want; opens like butter; reliable lock; acts like a big knife when open, but a medium when closed; aethestically very pleasing to fondle.

right on

Well, i kept my word and headed to the knife store instead of bed after work on Friday morning...

The Good News:

- My local knife shop (Plaza Cutlery in South Coast Plaza) has vastly increased the number of folders it keeps in stock.

- Thus, i was able to handle almost every knife on my shortlist as read in the initial post.

- I narrowed that list down to 2 knives via process of elimination based on determining factors for each knife (size, balance, lock, lefty capable, overall quality).

And the Winners Are...

- Kershaw's Mini-Cyclone (zdp/Ti)

- Spyderco's Mini-Manix (s30v/g10)

Both of these knives felt perfect in my hand and are built like tanks. Both can be easily opened/closed using either hand, comfortably/easily. Both look cool and aren't obtrusive for edc.

I also discovered that 1. Strider knives are built so solid it's scary and that i want one but it's out of my price range right now. 2. Sebenza's really aren't omgholycrapamazing, to me, at least. Nice, to be sure, but not worth their price tag imho.

Thanks for all your input guys, as it definitely helped and is much appreciated. :D

I'll also strongly recommend the mini Rittergrip. There is lots more info at http://www.equipped.org/rsk_mk1.htm .

Don't let your bias on handle material allow you to miss owning this fantastic knife. The Glass-filled Noryl GTX handle feels great and is tough as nails.

My EDCs are alternately the large Classic micarta Sebenza and--well within your budget--the equally absolutely terrific Benchmade 14205. These are my favorite folders of all the ones I've ever held.

I just got a Kershaw Blur and I love it. I haven't warmed up to G10 handles (I like metal handles), so I'd go woth the Kershaw mini-cyclone.

I don't think you can go wrong with either, however.

Of the knives listed, I would choose either the ZDP/CF Caly 3 or Benchmade D2 710. Which I'd pick would mostly depend on whether I wanted the larger or smaller blade, also whether I wanted the robustness of the Benchmade, or the cutting efficiency of the Spyderco.

I've been carrying a Spyderco for six years. Its slightly larger than the Endura. I think they call them the Police model now. I like it a lot. I trimmed a metal barb with it and chipped the blade but some time on a stone took it out. It sharpens up real well. The configuration is nice and flat. I'd go with that or a Benchmade but admit I'm not familiar with the others.
