Buying A New EDC. Which Would You Choose?!

well, for Production EDC I always recommend 2 things:

Buck/Mayo 172

and

Kershaw Groove.

I have the 172 and EDC it myself every day. I have played with and would like a Groove eventually. I have a Devastator, which the Groove is based on, but haven't had the chance to pick up a Groove yet. THAT is a great flipper! The 172 makes for a great high-end materials, low yield radar signal knife. Its sharp and good for most circumstances- which is why I'm looking forward to eventually getting the Buck/Mayo Waimea (the smaller version of the 172).

I'll also strongly recommend the mini Rittergrip. There is lots more info at http://www.equipped.org/rsk_mk1.htm .

Don't let your bias on handle material allow you to miss owning this fantastic knife. The Glass-filled Noryl GTX handle feels great and is tough as nails.

Yeah, i've owned a mini-Grip and while it was a great knife, the handle was just a tad too small to work comfortably in my hands.

Of the knives listed, I would choose either the ZDP/CF Caly 3 or Benchmade D2 710. Which I'd pick would mostly depend on whether I wanted the larger or smaller blade, also whether I wanted the robustness of the Benchmade, or the cutting efficiency of the Spyderco.

I was able to handle both those models as previously noted in my second to last post and actually found both of them "meh". Both built well, but boring to me for some reason.

Out of all the Spyderco's i handled, i liked the 88mm Manix far and above the rest.

Of the knives on your short list, I'd pick wichever Spyderco you like best, but my top choices wheren't represented on your list. First decide what's more important to you, a functional status symbol that others will recognise, and think "Nice Knife", or a pure multi-purpose tool. There are times when I want each of these. For the former, I'd save up and go with a Sebenza, for the latter, it's tough to beat the Leatherman Charge TTi with it's S30v blade. I got one of each, and both serve their intended purpose perfectly! I couldn't be more content with my EDC options. ;)

My choices would be the Blur SG2, or the Spyderco Caly 3 ZDP 189.

Not choppers, pure slicers out of the box . no mods necessessary. Top of the line steel, engineering, and class, and quality in the company when the time comes to stand behind the product. For the price it doesn't get better. Joe

I got to handle different models of the Sebenza in my local knife shop, and even the left handed specific model wasn't impressive, honestly.

Normally, i drool over a true left handed knife as they're so rare and typically based off a very good model. While the Sebenza is quality, it's not worth the price, to me.

Alright, well i decided since i'm gonna save up a little before pulling the trigger on the Mini-Cycone zdp/Ti, i needed a knife to tide me over in the mean time. :o

It came today

Ordered the Kershaw "Needs Work" from newgraham. This knife is downright awesome for $30. Great grippy handle, shaving sharp right out the box, and typically stellar Kershaw build quality. :D

The only gripe i have with it is that due to the shape and location of the pocket clip, it's very awkward for left pocket carry. A little annoying, but a moot point overall with such a kickass knife.

I now realize i love wharncliffe blades.
