If you want to beat the hell out of a knife and expect it to work consistently, a folder isn't the best choice. Becker or ESEE knives should do the job well.

Mr. Ant, Emersons have a strong rep for toughness and dependability, so I bet you would be happy with it. The company owner is very outspoken, and fit/finish are admittedly not first rate - and these things turn some folks off - but no one says they aren't tough knives. I'll have an Emerson some day.

I figure there are many levels of "beat the hell out of"

You can check out the ZT line. I have the 0200 and the 0350 and they're both extremely durable folders. There's also the Spyderco Manix 2, which I think is pretty tough as well, though not on the same level as the ZT's.

Just my .02

I agree a ZT would be a perfect answer, but the cost might be an issue. The Cold Steel at under $65 for the American Lawman or the Recon 1 - you can beat the folder to death and it will continue working. If it's broken or lost, it's not a huge loss.

Not a lot of money for a lot of knife.

EKI does make some solid folders.

In my opinion and you want a folding knife to "beat the hell out of" and have a couple hundred to spend your best bet would be a Zero Tolerance. In their price range they simply cannot be beaten , not to mention you get the best warranty any knife company has to offer.

For $58 to your door, you can have a 5 1/2" fixed blade, 1/4" thick of 1095 CroVan goodness. Becker BK2 will take pretty much anything you can dish out, REALLY !

I've been looking at chinese knives lately and they look like pretty good deals, for a beater knife the enlan el01 specifically looks good but I have yet to try one (might be my next purchase :D) I have the manix 2 it's a tough knife but for real tough use I still think a fixed blade is top dog (esee?)

It really depends on what you are using the knife for, and what your definition of beating on it means. If you are referring to cutting strings, cardboard boxes, envelopes IMO a para 2 is perfect for that price range. A lot of people are recommending the ZT's for a "hard use knife", but IMO the bulkiness of the blade (or entire knife for that matter) makes smaller things like opening packages or envelopes really difficult.

I can atest to the strength of the triad lock. I have used my lawman to baton through 2x4s. If you have not tried one i would suggest checking them out. You can pick up several for the price of an emerson or zt. I carry my lawman pretty much every day. I am not generally nice to my knives but it has held up wonderfully. Even after using it as a splitting wedge there is no blade play
