Buying back-ups

Has anyone else caught themselves buying "back-ups" for knives that you love? I recently picked up a second Case/Bose Tribal Spear simply to have one as a back-up so I can feel OK about using the second. I was thinking of also picking up a Case Swayback CV just in case they stop production.

I've never bought a back up to a knife that I already owned. That's probably because I don't have enough money to buy all of the knives I want as it is. Buying duplicates would only make the situation worse.:D It could be that I just haven't found a knife that I liked enough to do it.

Guilty as charged.

I consider buying backups for lots of knives but I've only actually done it with three knives. S&M Railsplitter, Tidioute Ez-Open, and Buck 703.

I have been trying to talk myself out of buying a backup for my Case Humpback Stockman too but the temptation keeps eating away at me.

I don't have the money for it, but I often find myself looking at Rotten Banana Serpentine Jacks even though I already own one. I love that knife and the handle material. If times were better I'm sure I would have pulled the trigger on another one by now.

I only buy duplicates of knives that I feel comfortable using without regret... ie kershaw chill, crkt premonition, spyderco tenacious/delicas ect...

I've done it a few times but not on anything high dollar. I would if I could afford it, though.

I've done it but only on low dollar stuff. Like I have three nearly identical Camillus TL-29s. No pricey stuff though. I don't really have any pricey stuff though.

And on new knives I don't because I know I can get a new one. Old stuff, I've been known to.

I'd rather have eight of the same knife than eight different knives, if given the option to pick anything I want.

Only knife I ever wished I'd bought a back-up for. My beloved Schrade 885UH, favorite knife of all time. Can't bring myself to pay the high-dollar prices they get now.:grumpy:

I have 2 Puma 667 Prospectors. One I bought in the early 80-ties and a final run from something around mid 90-ties. They look alike but looking closer there is a tremendous difference in craftmanship. The early one is close to perfect and the secound one much less so, but still a top rate knife. The old one is one of my most beloved posessions.

I have 5 EKA 38, 4 with plastic handle and one wood. I could sure get another one if it has carbon steel and a good bright coulour on the handle or another wood one. Its nice to carry different knifes but when using a pattern one is realy used to it gets more obvious the old sami tale gets that its the hand that is the tool

What he said. Word for word.

I almost got a Case Bose collaboration Dogleg as a backup because that knife is so dear to me. In the end I just couldn't spend that kind of cash on a double. I'm not Dr. Bill after all...:D

The closest I've come to backups is to get the same knife in different handle materials (see avatar as perfect example). I've thought of getting straight dups but haven't done so.

Along with what 2Dead said, not an exact duplicate, but if one really strikes my fancy I'll get a second one. But thats been very rarely done by me.
