Buying back-ups

happens with some knives, some deserve or need a backup
only bouble slippie is the #48 in cobblestone, love to carry it so much I wanted to have a spare one, in case

I didn't start buying back ups till I saw how easy/fast brands and models I liked go away after a Factory closing.

And then the Madness started. :D LOL

Just a sample of something that took my fancy. :)

i have like 6 or 8 sodbuster i think, got one in the truck, a couple in the tool box, one with my huntin stuff, a couple i carry, and couple in the dresser, i leave em places i know i'll need em just in case i forget one or heaven forbid misplace one.

thanks

Nope, my attachment grows to a used blade by me. It has my memories and just feels like an old friend. A replacement would never be the same to me.

i understand exactly what you mean by this, i have a medium stockman that has ridden with me for a long time now, and while i keep the sodbusters all around and i could always go buy another meduim stockman to put in this ones place it would never be the same, but sometimes we have to make another one used and give it some memories too. i would still be in a bad way if something happened to my stockman.

For the most part, I don't purchase backups of the same pattern. I like that they are all unique in the rotation.

Oh wait...if by "back-ups" you mean more of the same maker/pattern (not identical blade/handle confi.), than heck yes I do. I have 8 different Queen-made Canoes (Some regular Queens, Queen City, Northwoods, etc.). To me though, they aren't back-ups, they're all individuals.

To me a back-up would be the exact same knife that is put away and not used in case of loss, breakage, or theft of the original. If the handle materials or blade configurations are different then it is a collection of that pattern, used or not.

Sigh......yes (he says while looking sheepish) I own as many as 5 mint copies of one particular Case Stockman and lots of other duplicates.

The weird thing is I will keep buying more of that Case pattern......I just cannot help myself:foot:

Good question Cam. When I started this thread it was my observation that I thought I needed another Case/Bose Tribal Spear as a back-up. Now that I have carried my 1st tribal spear for a few months I'm realizing that this knife will probably outlast me! I've used it without worry of damage knowing that I have another sitting in the drawer but it still looks new with very little signs of wear.

Alright, this is going to sound peculiar and maybe like a couple of you other folks. I have enough knives and enough really good ones that I don't have to buy any backups. Having said that there are 3 or 4 that I really want a duplicate of just in case I leave it somewhere, drop it overboard, or something else like that happens. Odd that they all seem to be Case knives (what does this mean?). My sway back jack, my mini copperhead, the wharncliffe mini trapper that I won in Jasons' give away.

I am suitably backed up on the peanut; I now have four of them (got started on them as a result of Vince's give away). - Ed

I'm guilty of this.

It's not just with knives either. If I find an item I like that suits me, I'll often buy a duplicate or two. I guess for me it's basically the fear that I've found something I really like or works for me, so I want to have some back-ups/spares in case they stop making it.

magus, you've got me to thinking i need to run out and buy a few knives that i already have. hmmmm, i love buying knives, and if i buy one like i already have my wife will never know the difference.

thanks

Yeah, not just with knives. I can be pretty picky and many times when a favorite item "gave out" or was lost, there were no longer suitable replacements available. So now if I find something I REALLY like, I would pick up some as backups, amount depending on life expectancy or "losability". I bought a bonestag Case Jr Scout and loved it so much I bought stag and orange bone ones for redundency. Fortunately they were reasonable at the time, now more expensive so justifies it (too me anyway :D) I do carry them so they are all broken in.
Peace

Never thought I would want to but I wish I would have bought two Dan Burke Small Barlows as long as they were both acceptable. I really love this little knife.

I know the feeling. I have one that I use quite a bit. It has grown on me since it the only traditional that sent me to the doctor to have my finger glued back together :)

Has anyone else caught themselves buying "back-ups" for knives that you love? I recently picked up a second Case/Bose Tribal Spear simply to have one as a back-up so I can feel OK about using the second. I was thinking of also picking up a Case Swayback CV just in case they stop production.

I've only had my SBJ in CV for a few days, and already I want a back-up to keep pretty. And maybe another back-up for my user. And maybe a back-up for the non-user. It's that nice of a knife that I might have to have that many of them. And of course, a stag one in SS to carry when it gets humid here and the CV steel might not hold up in my pocket. And a back-up for one of those. And maybe a Gent in MOP for dressier occasions, even though "dressy" for Tucson is anything nicer than shorts and a T-shirt. And i suppose in a perfect world I'd have a real Bose SBJ as well.

Seriously, the SBJ is the only knife I've had in many years that I've truly wanted a back-up of. I'd like a back-up of my BM 940D2CF and 940Ti-01 (or 941's), but that's not practical for my bank account at the moment. Of course, I do have a Queen Dan Burke small barlow in the mail, and I might have to have a back-up of one of those too.

I've only backed up one knife ever. My CaseBose dogleg jack. Eased the pain somewhat when my user went on hiatus. Haven't been able to carry my other one though, wouldn't want that malaise of losing one's companion again. Sorta keep'n my eye out for a backup to use so I won't have to break out my backup.
