buying first pistol

I like the FN Herstal 9mm more than the Glock because the trigger is nicer, it's not as bulky, feels better, and has single/double action as opposed to the double of the Glock. I don't think you could beat the Glock for it's Niche (like in being a duty gun) but for a range gun you can do better. It's nice to have single action at the range....that's why I love my 1911's amoung numerous other reasons. You'll be pretty stoked on a FN. You don't really hear too much about them and they don't really set you off upon holding them in the store, but once you pop some rounds through it, you'll be hooked. A sweet gun. I hear that new Ruger 9mm is a duesy too!

Allrightythen I'll have to give the FN a look. I'm also liking the S&W .38 revolvers, the carry size.

I'd love a 1911 but even used they're very expensive. I'm trying to stay below $500. Here's what I think my list is narrowed down to:
Walther PPK
Walther P22
Bersa Thunder 380
Browning Buckmark/Ruger MkIII

It's interesting that the Bersa, a 380, is less expensive than the .22's on that list by a lot. It's like getting the PPK for half the price, it's just not as pretty.

Glock 19, seriously. If you TRULY don't like the feel of the glock, check out the S&W M&P, or the Springfield XD. They are sort of similar to glocks, but have more traditional feels. BTW the glock trigger pull is not double action only, it's safe action. Kind of in between a single action and a double action as far as trigger weight. If you want something to "mess" with, get a sig or a 1911, as they are like the BMW of pistols. If you want a true weapon, get a glock. I've carried several guns on duty (sig, beretta, glock), and far prefer the glock for it's simplicity.

So I got the Bersa 380 Plus (double stack mag). I haven't even shot it yet but it was a good price and I was sick of waiting.

I'm already thinking about which one to get next! I'm drooling over the Kahr K's, Beretta 92, HK USP, Sig Sauer too. I knew this would be an addiction.

i too really like the XD series, great pistols at a really good price, a bud recently got one of the .45s and is really happy with it.

i have a few kahrs, and while my K9 is "ok" it is imho too heavy i very much prefer the P series stuff with the poly frame, imho the kahr PM9 is as good as it gets for a edc pistol, & the P9 isnt far behind, my P9 is really accurate for a smallish pistol like that, PM9 too.

The feeling of the plastic frame bugs me. Heavy steel on top and airweight poly on the bottom. I think I like the stainless frames better, but what do I know? I honestly think my favorite is the Beretta.

Just take a look at the avatar ;). HK makes good guns but they are a bit pricey. Sig is also a very good gun, most SEALs still use the P226 in 9mm. The XD pistols are very comfortable to shoot, even the 45. Take down is an absolute breeze to do. The Glocks have a well deserved reputation but I just couldn't get used to the angle of the grip, where the XDs have I believe a 17.4 degree angle which is almost exactly the same as a 1911.
