I'm interested in buying a knife from TNK, but I'm concerned I'll have an issue with customs. Has anyone in the United States had any trouble buying knives from Canada?

Neil is rock solid.

that being said, the Customs issues are your own and not the fault of the shipper at all.

Research what you buy, and what is legal for your country of importation.

TNK is great to deal with.

(this thread doesnt really belong here, either)

I don't mean it's the fault of the shipper. I'm just wondering if anyone has any problems getting knives from Canada. I'm from the United States and the knife is legal here, but I've heard horror stories of knives being kept in customs for a very long time, and just wanted to hear about other experiences.

Where does this thread belong?

Canada ---> USA would have no problems, Customs are usually concerned with import cargo, as opposed to export cargo.

Customs would have no reason to hold export cargo for extended periods of time, unless it was illicit cargo, and they required information for an ongoing investigation.

I have bought from Neil, he ships internationally with UPS, and he runs a solid operation.

Have receipts ready and keep your purchases in their original wrapping. I am not sure but there may be something to be declared so if over a certain amount, you might have to pay custom duties.

Frankly, treatment you get is so arbitrary that they can do what they wish, whenever they feel like it. You will have no control for a large part, imho. I get bad flashbacks when I remember crossing the US-Canada border, even though I had no real problems, the waits were long, most of the border guard were remote, and quick to throw their weight around

You'll do OK as long as you remember that for the moment, they 're the boss if you are crossing by car. If by plane, same rules, but they should be checked in. Not sure if this helps, but at least do some research first.

I moved this to the proper forum.

Knives shipped TO Canada can get held up in Customs there.
Knives shipped FROM Canada generally do not get held up in Customs here.

As long as the items are legal here, it's only a delay,
anyway, and TNK takes good care of his customers.

TNK is a great webstore. Neil ships FedEx if memory serves me correctly. Usually takes 2-3 days to arrive. Shouldn't have any problems importing through US Customs.

OK, great. Does customs typically open my package or just do a check of the contents based on the description from the shipper?

I buy from TNK all the time and have NEVER had a problem!! Neil is on the of the BEST knife dealers out there, and he happens to be my FAVORITE one.
