Buying The Best

And let's face it: a Rolex is more than a watch for keeping time; if the truth be told, that $20 Timex or Casio will actually keep better time. A Rolex is -- in addition to being a timepiece -- a status symbol and it is to be earned. When your son graduates from college, maybe then give him the Rolex... when he has earned it. Or let him buy it for himself when he earns his first big bonus.

If I had a G Shock as a kid, I'd be happy as a clam. As a child, the one thing I knew about watches was a good watch should be water resistant to at least 200m.

... a good watch should be water resistant to at least 200m.

I've never understood the whole depth thing. A watch should be water-resistant, of course. But, beyond about 100 feet, about 30m, diving becomes very technical. 200m (650 feet round numbers) very few people in the world ever dive to; depths like that are the domain of elite technical divers. And those who do use a watch for diving that is substantially different than anything they or anyone would wear otherwise.

It's like the Space Pen. What? Are you expecting NASA to call at any moment? Unlike James Bond, I am unlikely to have to dive to retrieve the cypher machine from a sunken spy ship or blast off on a stolen space shuttle to save the world from an insane supercriminal on a moment's notice. I have "people" that do those sorts of things for me. So, I need neither a pen that can write in zero gravity or a watch that can tell time 650 feet under the ocean. Like James Bond, however, I do need a perfect martini every now and then.

I see where you are coming from. Very practical, much like a Zenith Chrono. I OTOH, have always equated quality with depth rating when it comes to watches. Prolly not the most reasonable guage of quality, but a lot of it is the owner/buyer perceptions.

Just so you know, I wasn't criticizing your choice in time measuring devices. I was drooling over a Zenith at Costco ($5999 approx) but my wife said the Rolex SD just looks better. :D

I watched a vid of what goes on in Rolex. From the clean room assembly conditions alone, I knew I made a good choice. Much like getting to know your tattoo artist, getting to know "who" makes your watch really helps your peace of mind concerning your purchase.
